خَدُّcheek الحَبيبِof the beloved زانَهُadorned it
عِذارُهُhis cheek-down ياO وَيليwoe to me
The beloved’s cheek has been adorned
My beloved's cheek adorned him,
By his cheek-down—woe is me!
His reproach, oh my woe!
وَكانَand was ظَنّيmy thought أَنَّهُthat it
يَميلُturns بيwith me عَنaway from مَيليmy inclination
And I had thought that it
And I had thought he
Would turn me away from my desire.
Would incline towards me from his leaning,
فَلاso no خَلاصَescape ليfor me إِذاthen
لاno وَالضُحىby the morning light وَاللَيلِand by the night
So there is no escape for me, then—
So there is no escape for me when
No, by the morning light and the night!
No, not the dawn nor the night.
