ياO سَرِيّاًnoble man لَهُto him السَعادَةُgood fortune وافَتcame
يا سَرِيّاً لَهُ السَعادَةُ وافَت
مِنfrom طَريقِthe path of العُلاeminence بِفَلَكِin the sphere of السُرورِjoy
مِن طَريقِ العُلا بِفَلَكِ السُرورِ
O noble one to whom good fortune has come,
O one blessed with happiness that arrived
By the path of eminence, in the sphere of joy;
On the path of glory, in the sphere of joy
وَكَريماًand a generous man مِنfrom بَيتِa house of مَجدٍglory مُشَيَّدِloftily built
وَكَريماً مِن بَيتِ مَجدٍ مُشَيَّدِ
جَلَّwas exalted شَأناًin dignity مَقامَهُhis station عَنbeyond قُصورِshortcoming
جَلَّ شَأناً مَقامَهُ عَن قُصورِ
And generous one from a lofty house of glory,
And generous, from a house of glory built
Whose station is exalted in dignity, beyond all shortcoming.
His rank is lofty, beyond mansions
بارَكَmay He bless اللَهُGod فيin مَليكِa sovereign تَوَلّاcared for (continued)
بارَكَ اللَهُ في مَليكِ تَوَلّا
كَyou (attached suffix) يَنبغيis fitting مِنَof التَوقيرِreverence
كَ يَنبغي مِنَ التَوقيرِ
May God bless a sovereign who has cared for
May God bless the king who assumed responsibility
You with the reverence that is due.
As befits veneration
مَنwho يُضاهيكَrivals you فيin الوَجاهَةِprestige وَالعِand honor (first part)
مَن يُضاهيكَ في الوَجاهَةِ وَالعِ
زِّhonor (completion) وَفيand in فَضلِthe excellence of بَيتِكَyour house المَعمورِflourishing
زِّ وَفي فَضلِ بَيتِكَ المَعمورِ
Who rivals you in prestige and
Who can match you in prominence, honor
Honor, and in the excellence of your flourishing house?
And the virtue of your prosperous house
نِعمَhow excellent أَصلٍa root يُزَيِّنُهُadorns it حُسنَthe beauty of فَرعٍa branch
نِعمَ أَصلٍ يُزَيِّنُهُ حُسنَ فَرعٍ
يَبعَثُsends forth الحَمدَpraise مِنfrom فِناءِthe courtyard of القُبورِthe graves
يَبعَثُ الحَمدَ مِن فِناءِ القُبورِ
What an excellent root, adorned by the beauty of a branch
What a fine origin adorned by a good branch
That sends forth praise from the courtyard of the graves!
That inspires praise from the realm of graves
أَيُّwhat نِعَمٍblessings هَكَذاlike this مُحَمَّدMuhammad باشاPasha
أَيُّ نِعَمٍ هَكَذا مُحَمَّد باشا
عَينُthe foremost of أَعيانِnotables ثَغرِناour port الناضوريal-Naduri
عَينُ أَعيانِ ثَغرِنا الناضوري
What blessings these are, Muhammad Pasha,
What blessings are these, Muhammad Pasha
Al-Naduri, foremost among the notables of our port!
The notable of our garrison in Al-Nador
لاحَshone فيناamong us هِلالُهُhis crescent قَبلَbefore تَمٍّfullness
لاحَ فينا هِلالُهُ قَبلَ تَمٍّ
فَتَعالىso it rose high عَلىabove ضِياءِthe radiance of البُدورِthe full moons
فَتَعالى عَلى ضِياءِ البُدورِ
His crescent shone among us before reaching fullness,
Its crescent dawned in us before completion
Then rose above the radiance of the full moons.
So it rose upon the glow of full moons
وَإِذاand when ماemphatic particle نَماgrew نُمُوُّthe growth of كَمالٍperfection
وَإِذا ما نَما نُمُوُّ كَمالٍ
حازَattained شَأناًhigh standing وَجازَand surpassed شِعريSirius (apparently intended; written 'my verse') العُبورِthe Crossing Star
حازَ شَأناً وَجازَ شِعري العُبورِ
And when it grows to perfection,
And when perfection grew
It attains high rank and outstrips Sirius, the Crossing Star.
He gained stature and my poetry crossed over
ياoh لَهُfor him (exclamatory) سَيِّدٌa lord كَريمُnoble السَجاياcharacter traits
يا لَهُ سَيِّدٌ كَريمُ السَجايا
سادَbecame preeminent قَدراًin standing بِفِعلِهِthrough his action المَشكورِworthy of thanks
سادَ قَدراً بِفِعلِهِ المَشكورِ
What a lord he is, noble in character!
O he has a generous master
He won high standing through his praiseworthy action.
Whose deed elevated his ordained fate
حامَcircled حَولَaround العُلاthe heights بِحَزمِwith resolve وَجدِand earnestness
حامَ حَولَ العُلا بِحَزمِ وَجدِ
فَاِجتَنىso he plucked مِنهُfrom it ماwhat حَلاwas sweet فيin البُكورِthe early morning
فَاِجتَنى مِنهُ ما حَلا في البُكورِ
He circled the heights with resolve and earnestness,
He strove around glory with resolve and effort
So he plucked from them what was sweet at dawn.
And gleaned from it what ripened in the early dawn
أَيُّهاO الشَهمُnoble-hearted man بِالمَحامِدِin praises أَبشِرrejoice
أَيُّها الشَهمُ بِالمَحامِدِ أَبشِر
وَاِشكُرِand thank اللَهَGod أَنتَyou خَيرُthe best شَكورِgrateful person
وَاِشكُرِ اللَهَ أَنتَ خَيرُ شَكورِ
O noble-hearted one, rejoice in praise,
O noble one, rejoice with praise
And thank God; you are the best of the grateful.
And thank God, for you are the best of those who are thankful
شَرَفُnobility القَدرِof standing زادَهُmay He increase him اللَهُGod عِزّاin honor
شَرَفُ القَدرِ زادَهُ اللَهُ عِزّا
بِفِخارٍwith glory عَلىabove السِماكِal-Simak (a star) ظَهيرِmighty
بِفِخارٍ عَلى السِماكِ ظَهيرِ
May God increase the honor of his noble standing,
The honor of fate, God increased his might
With mighty glory above al-Simak.
With pride over the high-ranked vizier
أَرخَتهُrecorded its date يَدُthe hand of التَهانيcongratulations فَقالَتand it said
أَرخَتهُ يَدُ التَهاني فَقالَت
جانِسِmatched المَجدَglory رُتبَةَthe rank of الناضوريal-Naduri
جانِسِ المَجدَ رُتبَةَ الناضوري
The hand of congratulations recorded its date and said:
The hand of congratulations recorded it and said
"Glory has matched al-Naduri's rank."
Match glory with the rank of Al-Nador
فَتَهنَأso rejoice وَدُمand remain حَليفَan ally of المَعاليlofty honors
فَتَهنَأ وَدُم حَليفَ المَعالي
أَنتَyou وَالأَهلُand the family فيin كَمالِthe fullness of الحُبورِjoy
أَنتَ وَالأَهلُ في كَمالِ الحُبورِ
So rejoice, and remain an ally of lofty honors,
So congratulate, and greet the companion of glory
You and your family in the fullness of joy.
You and the family in the perfection of serenity
وَتَقَبَّلand accept تَبريكَcongratulations خِلٍّa friend وَفِيِّloyal
وَتَقَبَّل تَبريكَ خِلٍّ وَفِيِّ
وَفيand in عُلاكُمyour (plural) eminence حَقّاًtruly يَفيhe keeps faith بِالنُذورِwith the vows
وَفي عُلاكُم حَقّاً يَفي بِالنُذورِ
And accept a loyal friend's congratulations,
And accept the congratulations of a friend and ally
And in your exaltation he truly fulfills his vows.
And in your ascent truly fulfills vows
