Tell those who shunned me—whenever I spoke of them,
Tell those who spurned me, when you are mentioned
powdered musk would follow the mention—
My talk was like pure musk whose trail lingers on,
وَالكُلُّand everyone يَعلَمُknows أَنّيthat I كِدتُI almost أَعبَدُهُمworship them
دونَto the exclusion of الأَنامِhumankind وَخَيرُand the best القَولِspeech أَصدَقُهُits truest
and everyone knows that I almost worshipped them
All know I almost worshipped them, preferred them
rather than anyone else—and the best words are the truest:
Above all people. Honesty guides the truest tongue.
أَحَبَّكُمI love you وَهَلاكيand my ruin فيin مَحَبَّتِكُمloving you
وَماand what اِحتِياليmy recourse وَجُهدِand the effort المَرءِof a person يُرهِقُهُexhausts him
I love you, and my ruin lies in loving you.
I loved you and was near destroyed for loving you,
And what recourse have I, when a man's effort exhausts him?
No trickery in trying, though striving wears one down.
ليfor me أُسوَةٌan example فيin غَراميmy passion وَالشَقاءُand misery بِكُمbecause of you
كَعابِدِlike a worshipper of النارِfire يَهواهاhe loves it وَتَحرِقُهُand it burns him
In my passion and misery through you, I have an example:
My passion is example enough in love, and sorrowing
a worshipper of fire, who loves it while it burns him.
Like the fire-worshipper longing for the fire though it burns him.
