لناfor us نبعةٌa nabʿ tree كانتused to تقيناprotect us فروعُهاits branches
وقدand already بلغَتhave been overtaken إلاexcept قليلاًa little عروقُهاits roots
We had a sturdy nabʿa tree whose branches sheltered us,
We had a nabʿ tree whose branches sheltered us,
and its roots had all but reached their full growth.
and almost all its roots have been overtaken.
وإناand indeed we لتستحليsurely find sweet المناياdeaths نفوسُناour souls
ونتركand we leave أخرىanother مرَّةًbitter لاnot نذوقُهاwe taste it
Indeed, our souls can find deaths sweet,
Indeed, our souls find death sweet,
while leaving another, bitter one untasted.
and we leave another, bitter death untasted.
وشيّبَand turned gray رأسيmy head قبلbefore حينthe time مشيبهits graying
رعودpeals of thunder المناياdeaths بينناamong us وبروقُهاand their lightning flashes
My head was grayed, before its season of gray, by
And my head was turned gray before its time
death’s thunderclaps among us and its lightning flashes.
by death’s thunder among us and its lightning.
رأيتI saw المناياdeaths بادياتٍcoming for the first time وعُوّداًand returning
إلىto دارناour home سهلاًeasy إليناto us طريقُهاtheir path
I saw deaths appear, returning again and again,
I have seen death come for the first time and return
to our abode—their road to us an easy one.
to our home, its path to us easy.
وقدand indeed قسمَتhas been divided نفسيmy soul فريقينinto two parts منهماof the two
فريقٌone part معwith الموتىthe dead وعنديand with me فريقُهاits part
I have divided my soul into two parts:
And my soul has been divided into two parts, of which
one part is with the dead; the other remains with me.
one is with the dead, and another is with me.
وبيناand while تُرجّىis given hope of النفسthe soul ماwhat هوit is نازحٌfar off
منof الأمرِaffairs لاقتit met دونهاin its path ماwhat يعوقُهاhinders it
And while the soul hopes for something still far off
And while the soul is given hope of something far off
in its affairs, it meets, before reaching it, what holds it back.
in life’s affairs, it meets in its path what hinders it.
وبيناand while تقولsays النفسthe soul أفعلI shall do فيin غدٍtomorrow
كذاthis وكذاand that فاستعلقَتهthen it ensnared it علوقُهاits clinging death
And while the soul says, “Tomorrow I shall do
And while the soul says, “Tomorrow I shall do
this and that,” its clinging doom catches hold of it.
this and that,” its clinging death ensnares it.
