Mukhāriq rose, assailing me, sparing no effort,

reproaching me for drinking aged, choice wine.

So I said: Abū Ṣakhr, let people be ignorant,

and take it—tawny wine, full of sparkle.

You see it, when water mingles with its body,

shimmering in the hand of the girdled servant.

It has a musk-like fragrance; its scent dispels

its drinker's blindness with exquisite gentleness.

And how many a critic of it, well aware of its excellence,

has it struck with an unerring, gliding arrow!

Then, at its fragrance, he kept biting in remorse

his hands, and foamed after long lip-smacking.

And he said: You have your excuse, Ibn Badr, for the wine

that soothes the cares of the love-stricken, yearning man.

So I will not, Ibn Ṣakhr, give up drinking wine

at the words of a base, ignorant know-it-all,

who faults me for drinking, though drinking is his obsession,

so he may be thought a man of sound, trusted judgment.

For I am no gullible fool, Ibn Ṣakhr, nor one

who persists in any ruinous course of action.
