May God bless that grave and purify it,
May God bless a grave and purify it,
at al-Thawiyya, where windblown dust sweeps over it.
At al-Thawiyya, where fine dust drifts over it.
زفّتbore in procession إليهto it قريشٌQuraysh نعشthe bier of سيدّهاits chief
فثَمّand there كلٌall التقىpiety والبرand righteousness مقبورburied
Quraysh bore to it the bier of its lord;
Quraysh bore its chief's bier to it in procession;
there all piety and goodness lie entombed.
And there all piety and righteousness lie buried.
أباO father of المغيرةal-Mughira والدنياand the world مفجِّعَةٌbringing bereavement
وإنand indeed منwhoever غرتdeceives الدنياthe world لمغرورsurely deluded
O Abu al-Mughira—the world is grief-stricken;
O Abu al-Mughira, the world brings bereavement,
whoever this world beguiles is surely deluded.
And indeed, whoever the world deceives is truly deluded.
قدindeed كانthere was عندكwith you بالمعروفof goodness معرفَةٌrecognition
وكانand there was عندكwith you للنكراءfor wrongdoing تنكيرcondemnation
You knew goodness for what it was,
With you, goodness found recognition,
and in your presence evil met rebuke.
And wrongdoing met with condemnation.
وكنتand you used to تفشيspread widely وتعطيand give المالwealth منfrom سعةabundance
إنeven if كانwas بيتكyour house أضحىbecame وهوwhile it is مهجورdeserted
You spread your bounty and gave wealth unstintingly,
And you would distribute wealth and give abundantly,
though your own house came to stand deserted.
Though your house now stands deserted.
ولاnor تلينyou yield إذاwhen عوسرتَyou were treated harshly مقتسِراًcompelling by force
وكلّand all أمركyour dealings ماso long as يوسرتyou were treated gently ميسورeasy
You would not yield when harshly pressed and forced,
Nor would you yield when treated harshly, but would impose your will;
yet all your dealings were easy when you were met with ease.
And all your dealings were easy so long as you were treated gently.
الناسthe people بعدكafter you قدindeed خفّتhave grown light حلومُهمtheir minds
كأنماas though نفَخَتblew فيهاthrough them الأعاصيرwhirlwinds
After you, the people’s minds have grown light,
People's minds have grown unsteady since your passing,
as though whirlwinds had blown through them.
As though whirlwinds had blown through them.
لمdid not يعرفrecognize الناسthe people مذsince غيّبتyou were buried فتنتهمtheir ordeal
ولمand did not يجلّdispel ظلاماًdarkness عنهمfrom them نورlight
Since you were hidden from sight, people cannot fathom their trials,
Since you were laid to rest, people have not understood their ordeal,
nor has any light dispelled their darkness.
Nor has any light dispelled the darkness from them.
لوif خلدّmade immortal الخيرgoodness والاسلامand Islam ذاone possessed of قدمٍmerit
إذاًthen لخلدكَwould surely have made you immortal الإسلامIslam والخيرand goodness
If goodness and Islam could immortalize a man of long service,
If goodness and Islam could immortalize a man of merit,
then Islam and goodness would surely have immortalized you.
Then Islam and goodness would surely have made you immortal.
