One finds fault with me for wine who, were he to taste it,
would go mad for it until he was laid in the grave.

صراحاً كما أغراكَ ربّك بالهجرِ
So leave it be, or praise it: we love it
unmixed, just as your Lord has enticed you into foul speech.

تريح الفتى من همه آخر الدهر
Why do you disparage wine, when wine, true to its name,
relieves a young man of his cares to the end of time?

غراماً بها إن الملامةَ قد تغري
So blame me, for reproach over it increases
my passion for it; reproach may indeed entice.

And by God I truly swear: were you to drink it,
you would surely cease reproaching me and incline to excuse me.

And if you wish, try it and taste it aged:
it has a fragrance like musk and is praised when tried.

So if you do not cast off your bridle, blame me,
and say to me, 'May God curse you, you inept fool!'

And I accepted the reproach I had received for drinking it in the morning,
and for drinking it, from Badr; then I turned away from Badr.

And I sipped it with men whose faces seemed
like gold dinars amid hardship and grim times.

خلقت أبيّا لا ألين على القسر
So spare me reproach over it, for I
was born unyielding; I do not bend under force.

I give generously and bestow precious possessions freely,
and pay dearly for it in prosperity and hardship.

And I drink it until I fall, sprawled on the ground—
aged, tawny, sweet in fragrance.

And were it not for reason, I would not be sober a single hour of my life;
but I restrained myself from foul speech.

So I held back from it after long obstinacy
and love for it, in my private life and in the open.

And it is fitting for one like me to refrain from obscenity
and desist from some waywardness and wrongdoing.
