كذبت فما إن أنت بالمتخيّر
Carry my message to whoever said this, and tell him:
You lied, for you are by no means discerning.

Had you kept Salm’s company, you would have found him
As you knew him—his old evil ways unchanged.

To yourself? Then deceive as you please, or desist.

Deny it—but you are hostage to disgrace,
And to a day like other days, grim and fierce,

على الرمح ينحر أو تأخّر يعقَر
Like a chestnut horse caught between two spears: if it advances
Against the spear, its throat is pierced; if it retreats, it is hamstrung.
