Abu Bahr dictates affairs he wants
And disapproves of them for the generous, affectionate man.
And dislikes for the cordial Arrahi

So counsel yourself, Ibn Qays, and leave me
So yourself give advice, son of Qays, and leave me be
And my judgment alone; mine is no fool's judgment.
And my opinion, my opinion cannot be refuted

And do not order me to be frugal, for I
Have seen that the man of great wealth is not immortal.
Saw that abundant wealth does not last

Aged, yellow like the scent of musk
When it gives off fragrance, it dispels the thirsty one's burning thirst.
When it diffuses, it takes away the heaviness of the mind

Take heed: sound judgment, whose path is clear, is nothing but
Know that the clear way is
The opposite of what you said when you were my guide.
Unlike what I said, since you are my guide

And I gladden my drinking companions and follow my desire,
And my regrets make me happy, and I follow my desires
And freely give away all that my hand possesses.
And spend generously whatever my hands possess

من الشربِ للماءِ القراحِ المصَرَّدِ
Such is life—not the life of Ibn Qays and his companions,
Such is the life, not the life of Ibn Qays and his friends
With their drinking of pure, chilled water.
Of drinking water, pure, filtered
