لهفيmy grief عليكَfor you للهفةٍindeed the anguish منof خائفٍone afraid
لهفي عليكَ للهفةٍ من خائفٍ
يبغيseeks جواركَyour protection حينwhen ليسَthere is no مجيرprotector
يبغي جواركَ حين ليسَ مجير
My grief for you is indeed the anguish of one afraid,
My longing for you is the longing of one who fears,
Seeking your protection when there is no protector.
Seeking your neighborhood when there is no refuge.
أمّاas for القبورthe graves فإنّهنّthen indeed they أوانسٌcomforted by companionship
أمّا القبور فإنّهنّ أوانسٌ
بجوارby nearness to قبركyour grave والديارand the dwellings قبورgraves
بجوار قبرك والديار قبور
As for the graves, they are comforted
Graves are companions
By the nearness of your grave, while dwellings are graves.
In your neighborhood, and homes are graves.
عمّتreached everyone فواضلُهhis acts of generosity فعمّso reached everyone مصابُهhis loss
عمّت فواضلُه فعمّ مصابُه
فالناسso the people فيهon his account كلهّمall of them مأجورrewarded
فالناس فيه كلهّم مأجور
His generosity touched everyone, so his loss touched everyone;
Its afflictions have spread, so its pain has spread,
Thus all the people are rewarded for suffering his loss.
And all people in it are rewarded.
ردّتrestored صنائعهhis good deeds إليهto him حياتهhis life
ردّت صنائعه إليه حياته
فكأنّهso as though he منthrough نشرهاtheir being made known منشورraised to life
فكأنّه من نشرها منشور
His good deeds restored his life to him,
His life has returned his good deeds to him
So, through their being made known, he seems raised to life.
As if it were a scroll spread out from its folds.
