What dispelled grief and worry from me, and

banishes misfortunes, is drinking clarified wine.

For, by God, I remain besotted with wine,

Even if every noble, rightly guided man reproaches me for it.

For my critic over it, though a sincere adviser, is not

more knowledgeable than I about pure, aged wine.

But my heart is consumed with love for it,

And love of singing slave girls is every fool's choice.

I love that which I can never bring myself to hate,

And that is a deed that delights every witless man.

I shall drink it unmixed and give my companions drink,

And seek the girdled gazelle's unguarded moments.
