هوhe الشمسُthe sun إلاexcept أنّthat للشمسthe sun has غيبةًan absence
هو الشمسُ إلا أنّ للشمس غيبةً
وهذاand this الفتىyoung man العمريّʿUmarī ليسdoes not يغيبُbecome absent
وهذا الفتى العمريّ ليس يغيبُ
He is the sun, except that the sun is absent at times;
It is the sun, though the sun has its settings,
And this ʿUmarī youth is never absent.
While this youth of life never leaves us,
يروحُgoes forth in the evening ويغدوand goes forth in the morning ماnot يفتِّرslackens ساعةًfor a moment
يروحُ ويغدو ما يفتِّر ساعةً
وإنand if قيلَit is said ناءfar away منكfrom you فهوthen he قريبُnear
وإن قيلَ ناء منك فهو قريبُ
He goes forth evening and morning, never slackening for a moment;
Coming and going, his constancy never lapsing,
And if he is said to be far from you, he is near.
And if he is called, he is near.
