    O friend who honored every friend,

    And a beautiful one who loved all beauty,

    And chaste, though unrestrained in his love of beauty,

    And the arrow of gossip brought him to death's brink.

    والله على صدق ما أقول وكيلي

    You were among the most charming of humankind;

    And God is my guarantor for the truth of what I say.

    How often you remembered your Lord in secret,

    And openly sang love verses about the beautiful.

    And some people make a show of piety,

    Yet in secret they are the vilest kind.

    People misjudged their fellows and went too far

    In harming them—how many have they slain!

    And I read inner secrets in the face,

    And my heart is my guide to people.

    The light we see upon your face is enough for us:

    A sure sign of the conviction deep within.

    And you were adorned with cheerfulness and tenderness,

    And gentleness—yes, and a beautiful character.

    In your lifetime, you honored our lodging,

    Distant though we were—my companion and I.

    So we spent a time in affection,

    The finest time beneath friendship's sheltering shade.

    So greetings—if greetings could avail—

    To you, from a heart wasted by grievous longing.

    Your gentle spirit visited mine

    In a dream, and my thirst burned still more fiercely.

    How did you escape your place in the dust

    To our land, so broad and long?

    ح ودمعي على الوفاء دليلي

    This is proof of your faithfulness, O friend;

    And my tears are my proof of faithfulness.

    ليس يجديك في الممات عويلي

    Worldly interests kept us apart while you lived;

    My wailing does you no good in death.

    أو هل أنت يا صديقي مقيلي

    And, by your worth, my neglect of you was shameful;

    Or will you, my friend, forgive me?

    The dwellings are desolate after you; glory

    To Him who alone abides forever.

    Do you think we shall see you in God's shelter,

    As you said, O noblest of friends?
