Youth will never return to you,
Youth will not return to you, for time moves on
until Umm Ṣabbār becomes a sand dune.
Until you become like a hillock on the plain
ماليwhat ails me? قَدalready اصبَحتُI have become آلاًa shadow-like bodily form قَدindeed تَنقَّضُنيunravels me
بَعضُsome of النَّواكِثِthe unravelers حَبلاًa rope بَعدَafter إِمرارِtight twisting
What ails me? I have become a mere shadow, being unraveled
What ails me that I am now weak and frail
by some unravelers, like a rope once tightly twisted,
Crumbling as the grasses after rains
مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat كُنتُI was فيهاin it ناشِئاًa youth غَمَراًinexperienced
كأَنَنيas though I خارِجٌcoming out مِنfrom بَيتِthe shop of عَطّارِa perfumer
after once being a young, inexperienced man there,
After my youth here, exuberant and strong
as though I were emerging from a perfumer's shop.
As if just leaving an perfumer's domain
لَقَدindeed رَكِبتُI rode العَصاthe staff حَتىuntil قَدalready اوجَعَنيmade me ache
مِماbecause of what رَكِبتُI rode العَصاthe staff ظَهريmy back وأَظفاريand my nails
I have indeed ridden the staff until I am sore,
I rode the stick until it pained me so
my back and nails aching from riding the staff.
For riding it, my back and fingers strain
لاnot أُبصِرُI see الشَّخصَthe person إِلاexcept أَنthat أُقارِبَهI draw near to him

I cannot see a person unless I draw near to him,
I cannot see a face until up close
my sight grown dim after once seeing clearly.
My vision fails me after keen discerning
