If this age brings changes upon me,
Or one age follows another in turn,
وأُمسِand I become شَيخاًan old man كالعَريشِlike a bower أَحدباhunchbacked
إِذاwhen مَشيتI walk أَتَشكىI complain of الأَصلُباthe back
And I become an old man, hunched like a bower,
When I walk, I complain of my back,
تَضَوُّرَgroaning العَودِthe aged camel اشتَكىcomplained أَنthat يُركباit be ridden
فَقَدyet indeed أُناغيI speak tenderly to الرشأَthe fawn المربَّباpampered
Groaning like an old camel that complains of being ridden—
Yet I once spoke tenderly to a pampered fawn,

خَوداًa tender maiden ضِناكاًample-bodied لاnot تَمُدُّextends العُقَباthe heels
Adorned with earrings, full-bodied and henna-dyed—
A tender, ample maiden who takes no long strides.

Her two flanks quiver whenever they move,
Like a drunken man shaking a saysab branch.

For each age I have worn garments,
Of a seamless wrap and a striped Yemeni cloak,
حَتىuntil اكتَسىwas clothed الرَّأسُthe head قِناعاًa veil أَشيباgrizzled

Until my head was clothed in a grizzled veil,
White flecked with black, neither pleasant nor beloved—

The most hateful cloak, when donned.
