    I swear by the Lord of the sacrificial offerings at their sacred stations,

    and where people's vows and sacred rites are fulfilled,

    and by the Lord of every penitent who spends the night in supplication,

    reciting the Book diligently, never desisting:

    I shall never deny what you have bestowed on me,

    until I am numbered among the dead when they perish.

    Indeed, when the caliphate was driven out, it departed

    from the people of Yathrib, when they followed a path other than guidance.

    It passed to its rightful people among them, and to its heir,

    when God saw the outrage they committed against Uthman.

    Those who shed his blood in injustice and disobedience—

    what blood they shed—may they not be guided out of their error!

    And those who tore the veil of one with rights and inviolability—

    what a veil protecting their own partisans they thus tore apart!

    And those who opened a locked gate, where there will always be

    killing for killing, and battle, for ages to come.

    تَنعي ابنَ أَروى عَلى أَبطالِها الشِّكَكُ

    And the horses are grim-faced, spattered with blood;

    the arms upon their champions proclaim the death of Arwa's son—

    every gleaming Indian sword and ample coat of mail,

    covering the fingertips, with interlaced links in its weave.

    Most of them were hemmed in, trapped in a siege,

    and their assassins were slain for the murders they committed.

    وَقَد يَقَرُّ بِعَينِ الثائر الدَّركُ

    Eyes were cooled by that and found healing in it;

    and attained redress may well cool the avenger's eye.

    وَقَد يلوّي الغَريمَ الماطِلُ المَعِكُ

    And most of the debts were thus exacted through it;

    and a stalling, contentious debtor may put his creditor off.

    And that is a lesson for those who harbor rancor,

    if a people are turned from guidance or obedience,

    or should the earth stretch out beneath them, only to hurl them

    to al-Muwayzij, or should al-Barak summon them.
