Ah, anguish for what I have suffered—anguish!

And pity for those among them I have not met—pity!

Asma—what an Asma, the night she journeyed

to me and my companions—how remarkable, how very remarkable!

    وَهَل عادَةٌ لِلرّبعِ أَن يَتَكَلَّما

    Ask the abandoned dwelling where Umm Salim headed;

but is it a dwelling's custom to speak?

And a word for her: “How dear you are!” Has a thought arisen

in her, or has she wished, since us, to remain unwed?

If a dwelling could return an answer to a questioner,

the dwelling would have signaled to me, or made itself understood.

    وَحَسبُك داء أَن تصحَّ وَتَسلَما

    I find my sight troubling me after its sharpness;

remaining healthy and safe is illness enough for you.

The two alternations—a day and a night—do not delay

in catching what they pursue, once they seek it.

A sound I heard from afar, and a glance

I caught, when the night had grown impenetrable,

in the freshness of a youthful season, which seemed,

when I rose, to clothe me in an arrow-patterned mantle.

In earnest, did the laden caravans stir your longing as they headed

toward Hadanayn, passing Yaramram on the right?

On every tightly built camel from Yabrin, strain was laid upon

the strands of its two girths, encircling a belly far from slender.

They grazed dark bitter herbage in every valley-bottom

through all the months of Jumada and through Muharram,

to al-Nir, then al-La'ba, until they exchanged

    their bellowing for muffled tooth-grinding.

Their bloodstained patches turned chestnut, and

the wounds at their loins resembled a ruined den.

They waded through pools with their forelegs and shook

their saddle-frames, save for an anklet-like strap.

The bull with the throat-pouches had become bright,

white as silver bracelets, and the dark one dusky.

They reached for the edges of the protected pasture and attained them,

but fell short of advancing into its middle.

The scouts brought them, with one parting them,

loose among the loudly rumbling and the voiceless.

The maidens approached them, but they repelled

the maidens' hands, too proud to be bridled.

They brought near a girth-strapped camel, its girth seeming

on a peak that even a mountain kid would shrink from attempting.

A rugged beast, as though jinn made music around him,

with a singer's voice and echo whenever he warbled.

    أَطالَ بِها عامَ النِتاجِ وأَعظَما

    An Arhab-bred dam bore him without rain;

her foaling year brought height and mighty size.

    وَفَعماً إِذا أَقبلته العينَ سَلجَما

    Seen from behind, his back is tightly knit;

seen face-on, he is massive and long-bodied.

Powerfully built, with sparse eyebrows, when he strides

over hills he gives them a broad, massive sandal.

He grazed the hospitable heartland between Zabin

and al-Khawr, on herbs nourished by autumn rain and drizzle.

They brought him, broad-flanked, unmarked by

    the herdsmen's saddles, shaggy-bearded and high-humped.

When she came to him, she fastened into his nose-peg

a firm rein like a serpent of the wild fig-tree.

Powerful, he guarded against the rein, as though

her nose-ring had made a speckled serpent bite the nose-peg.

When that wholly massive beast submitted to rebuke,

like a rocky ridge, following a girth set forward,

lo, the pride of spirit with which he kept shielding himself

was a ploy: it had not made him forget his training.

As though the cries of shrikes in every wild lote-tree

were the rattling of his jaws whenever they rattled.

She told her two sisters, “Time to leave!” and brought forward

    a Khuthaymi palanquin, visibly dark.

She brought it, neither rigid in its sidepieces

    nor loose-nailed or stubby.

They adorned it with colored wool, until, if

it were told, “Come here, drifter!” it would advance.

When they uncovered its wrapping, they stroked it

with soft fingertips adorning plump, tattooed forearms.

It has tufts, with wind amid its openings,

like flutes blowing broken, shattering notes.

Painted red, with cowries gleaming along its top,

it rumbled when the wind rumbled within it.

As though the wind's trembling between its openings

were jinn musicians visiting a tribe at Ayham.

Its makers took pride in it, and horses found

their likeness in it, until it nearly neighed.

They circled it, seeming about her palanquin like

the Pleiades' cloud, raining on Najd and bringing autumn growth.

If wood could, through beauty of form,

give greetings or walk, it would have walked or greeted.

Through the embroidery, when they let it hang, you would imagine

    a horse pacing stately, high-eyed and well-fleshed.

Through the height of morning they did not move, until

the maidens' brows streamed saffron and crimson resin.

They said to her, “Rise—we would ransom you—and mount!”

She said, “Oh, no!”—nothing more than words.

They supported her between them until she climbed, heavy-bodied,

swaying as a sand-dune sways and then crumbles.

She came, her gait swaying the Maysan cloth

as the east wind sways a dune's rain-moistened branch.

One of the fair women, she lived between a cherished mother

and a loving father who indulged and honored her.

So pampered that, were ants to creep

across her skin, their tracks would ooze blood.

One of the fair women, languorous, who, if she entangled

a man's mind, would not let him escape unharmed.

She sleeps through morning, visiting neither distant neighbors

nor the nearest neighbors except with effort.

A dazzling beauty: you see perfume spattered at her neckline

as a beast of prey spatters its wounded, blood-drained victim.

She is not one of those whose talk consists,

before the tribe's houses, of “Indeed” and “It is only”—

tales that brought nothing about, merely

yesterday's fabricated lies, words flung out in guesswork.

    وَكانَت لَها الأَيدي إِلى الخَدبِ سُلّما

    She did not mount until her day had grown long;

hands became her ladder into the broad litter.

She did not enter the litter before

the bindings atop its leatherwork cracked and broke.

He gurgled when half of her was within the curtained seat,

and half upon his back-ridges, not yet settled.

They did not leave her until she curled around his rein

fingers like silk fringes, and a wrist.

Once she mounted him, he could scarcely lift her

as he rose, until he drew himself tight and braced himself,

until his ropes answered one another with creaking,

and the beams of his chest nearly broke.

    وَرامَ بِلَمّا أَمره ثُمَ صَمَّما

    His calluses left their mark on solid rock;

he attempted his task with difficulty, then held firm.

They glorified God and raised their voices when they saw him

swift beneath her, easy-swaying and fleet.

When he rose, they watched him from behind—his gait,

his back-ridges rising beneath her, full and rounded.

When she was settled above him, she found no demands

    except to sway and bend.

When the tribe set out in the morning's brightness,

they gathered instructions and murmured talk,

slipping away like pale gazelles, fearful for themselves

of the sun, when the sun became a branding iron.

They departed, having left every attendant

of theirs, and pressed against the embroidered curtain.

I called for Ajla, and longing seized me,

while Maryam's howdahs had crested the two ridges.

He brought a lively, swift she-camel, bearing

scars from girths, single and paired.

Her two grooms showed her fresh fodder, and she pranced

in high spirits, carrying neither fetus nor blood.

With hardship upon hardship, they coaxed her and secured

their two reins firmly to the brass ring.

She yielded, recognizing the bridle, and concealed,

in place of a faint cry, a stifled resentment.

She came outstripping her two leaders, leaving

their sandals nothing but severed straps.

The pebbles from beneath the pointed front of her hoof seemed

    scattered stones and splintered safflower.

Her two upper forelegs swung vigorously, and she forced

my two grooms' camels into a swift trot, and they trotted.

When we caught up, no man with a longing could tell

the women, nor any man with a need, what he sought.

There were only glimpses through gaps and watchfulness,

fear of enemies, and divided glances—

few of them; the women urged their mounts onward, and

our pale camels hastened, scattering cloudlike foam.

We said, “Oh, turn toward us, Umm Tariq!”

She confides, and her confidences heal the love-crazed.

She turned toward us from a massive camel which, when it traveled,

had its embroidered curtain slip away from its forelegs.

Nothing stirred this longing but a dove

calling to Saq Harr in sorrow and song.

A gray dove, black on both sides of the neck, she sought at dawn

a dark frond of a young palm, at sunrise.

When the wind shook it or played with it,

she trilled upon it, standing erect and upright.

She matched the doves of both valley-banks, then returned

to a mute three-day chick between two sticks.

He wore a collar not bestowed by an amulet,

nor by a goldsmith hammering a dirham with his hands.

The clumsy one built his home, though gentle

with him, among sticks, conspicuous on a height.

She nurtured a dusky, downy chick; you could see on him

tubes of swiftly sprouting, blackish feathers.

As though hanwa blossoms lay upon his mouth's corners

when he stretched out his neck to be fed.

When he clothed himself in soft feathers and could find

no perch beside her in the nest's open space,

a low-swooping hawk was sent upon him, leaving

her no child but decaying remains and bones.

She climbed onto a branch in the morning, leaving

no mourner any respite in her sorrow.

Collared and dark-marked, she sings whenever

summer draws near and spring withdraws and ceases.

They tugged at slender arak twigs, and she reached back

to the woman facing her among them, for a supple, straight twig.

She rubbed her gleaming front teeth with it, as though

polishing strung pearls with the fresh twig.

When I wished, she sang to me in Bisha's valley-bends,

or the palms of Tathlith, or of Yabanbam.

I marveled at her: how could her song be

eloquent when she did not open a mouth to utter it?

I have seen no grieving creature with a voice like hers,

nor an Arab stirred by a speechless creature's voice

as I am when she sings; but her voice

has a lament that would make an old camel groan, could he understand.

My two friends, rise, console me, and look

at the lightning as it rends the sky with radiance and smiles.

A crossing cloud passed from Tihama, sent

to Najd; the lightning roamed Najd and Tihama.

As though faint winds had brought it forth

from the lowlands, setting the burning reeds ablaze,

like the shaking of noble horses when

eyes turn toward them, and they awaken sleepers.

My two friends, I complain of what has struck me,

that you may know for certain what I have endured.

I charge you both: whoever betrays a trust

will one day bear a sin before God for it.

Do not divulge my secret, nor abandon a brother

who has shared his hidden story with you.

Make for me—God bless you both—

a ladder to the household of Layla al-Amiriyya.

And say, when you have passed the household of Amir

and passed the two tribes, Nahd and Khath'am,

“We are two exiles from Jurm ibn Rabban; they

refused, amid turmoil, to supply even a cupping-cup's worth.”

    وَلا تحملا إِلا زِناداً وأَسهُما

    Travel on two lean mounts, straddling them;

carry nothing but fire-strikers and arrows,

and fresh provisions—lighten their burden upon you.

Divulge no secret, and bear no blood-guilt.

    وإِن خِفتُما أَن تُعرفا فَتَلَثَّما

    If it is night, disguise your lineages;

if you fear recognition, veil your faces.

Say, “We set out as merchants, but were delayed by

mounts we left waiting at Tathlith.

If our cloth wares and slaves had reached us,

those of you we found penniless would have grown wealthy.

There is none of you whom we have not seen drawing near

to us—praise be to God—visibly offering greetings.”

    وَلا تَستَلِجّا صَفقَ بَيعٍ فَتُلزَما

    Prolong the bargaining with them until you are established;

do not press to conclude a sale and so become bound.

When you have settled comfortably and feel secure,

and gathered whatever you wished, then speak.

Say to her, “What do you command concerning a friend

of ours whose heart you have left enslaved by love?

Tell us plainly: we saddled our mounts

to come to you, hoping only for a little time.”

They returned without having fulfilled my need,

coming to me without having firmly settled the matter.

What a pair of messengers sent upon a task!

They squandered inherited wealth and brought impoverishment.

Did you two not know I was afflicted, and so remember

my suffering when a people's bank crumbles?

Ah, will Umm al-Walid's shade speak

to my shade when I am a grave and bones?

Iron blades pared it down, laying bare

its solid upper parts; its sound had been magnificent.

They circled it in early morning and lifted it

with hands on which the bracelets seemed speechless.

They chose either fine-trimmed purple cloth

    or patterned brocade from Iraq.

Amir tasted from us, on the day of La'la',

a cutting sword that struck decisively when shaken in the hand.

On each mount with jutting girth-places, you see

ribs that wear away the slender woven girth.

Hardy beasts the herdsmen had passed over and neglected,

they grew accustomed to a quaking, ravenous, broad-jowled bull.

On a towering beast whose vast frame can scarcely

stretch the slender woven girth across his flanks.

He appeared like a bird shaking dust from its eyes, late at night, as though

a lamp unveiling the night when darkness falls.

Sure-footed, massive of frame, with uneven tooth-points,

the disputant says, “He has long been spared for breeding.”
