I fell ill, but Janub did not care for me,

and I lay gravely sick, though the walk to me was short.

At Juml’s two ruined camps you stood, son of Amir,

and you had been foxlike, though the place to visit was near.

On high ground in Rawd al-Ghudar, as though

the white gazelle were her kin after long desolation.

The winds of al-Akhrajayn lingered over them both,

    and a far-traveling rain-cloud from Dhu al-Buraq.

Every cloud pouring heavy rain lingered over it,

and the valley bend rang with the torrents’ scouring.

And a woman said: “An infrequent visitor; and to see him

at Halyah or Dhat al-Khimar is a wonder.”

Indeed! You two, remember the year when we and our people sought pasture

in Dara’s watercourses, while the surrounding land was fertile,

the nights when the beautiful women’s eyes and hearing

    were turned to me, and my wind was their south wind;

when whatever people said was of little account

to us, and the bough of youth was tender.

May God not banish youth, nor our saying,

whenever we fell into passion: “We shall repent.”

And he who made you hope that wishes would favor you

with her after the days of youth is surely a liar.

And he who cures you of what is contained

within your ribs—longing for her—is surely a physician.

A broad mantle of night will suffice you,

and a tawny she-camel keen for far-flung errands.

Steady in ardor, comely; her water was mingled

for her by a fosterling of the vineyards’ wine.

When directed on a course, she set off with proud confidence,

like one in love, playful with her two thick lips.

As a dusky sandgrouse hastened to water her chicks

freely at Shamzah, while waters lay far apart.

She set out at dawn, not climbing into the sky, and beneath her,

when she looked, lay chasms and steep descents.

Companion to seven; if once they came in succession,

they beat their wings, and heads and flanks fell into line.

Eight upon two embankments, no more in number,

they set out paired, with no lone follower.

Whenever they took heed of al-Bulayy, she murmured

    to them—a restless, swift-flying seeker.

She arrived before the sandgrouse came, then sped away

to her dwelling, while water-seeking birds came in turns.

And she returns to helpless downy chicks, separated from her by

a fearsome wilderness the eyes cannot span.

She came, her water-vessel, with which she had reached the water,

tied by its strap to her upper breast, full.

    فَما هِيَ إِلا نَهلَةٌ فَوُثوبُ

    They described rain-clouds to her over a barren land;

it was only a draught, then a leap.

    فَما هيَ إِلا لمحةٌ وَتَغيبُ

    On two swift wings she rose one evening;

it was only a glance, and she was gone.

Eight in two quartets swooped ahead

on the morning of the fifth-day watering, with no lone follower.

A dusky sandgrouse cleaves the dark; between her and her chick

at Mitla Arik lie a barren plain and wide wastes.

As though strings of spaced pearls were hung,

in the nights when Juml bewitched men,

upon a wild doe: the exposed parts of her back

are smooth, while her form is mature.

I remembered you when she stretched her neck from her covert,

and remembering you, Sabbat, is wondrous to me.

So I said: “By God, do not frighten her, you two,

for she has brought good news that the meeting is near.”

We spent the day beside a cave, and our riding-camels spent it

beside round-crowned trees with outlying boughs,

beside trees of dusky shade, as though they were

fasting nuns who had forsworn drink.

When she set out, she had grown lean, save for a packed mass

in her belly, containing acacia pods and khudub plants.

Firm-rumped and arch-chested, she rose high

on shaft-like legs upon which she rises and descends.

When she began dripping, the wayward one spent the night sniffing her,

as a physician feels the inward parts of the sick.

She filled out as an exhausted camel regains flesh, and came to have

within her the pride of an unruly beast, though she was rideable.

Toward one like an ivory casket, whose clefts poured freely

a brown liquid, sweet and pleasant to me with her.

The herbage took on a mixed color from it, as though it

were sickly and pale with saffron water.

I remain as though I were drinking aged wine

that creeps through the bones of its drinkers.
