لَقَدindeed غادَرَleft behind المَوتُdeath قَبلَbefore الصَّفاal-Safa
وَبَعدَand beyond المشقرal-Mushaqqar قَدراًworth جَليلاgreat
Death has indeed left behind, before al-Safa,
Death left before youthfulness,
And beyond al-Mushaqqar, a man of great worth:
And after hardship, a great destiny.

Abundantly sweet in character,
How sweet were his manners,
Intensely bitter, unyielding yet gentle.
Bitter and difficult to appease.
خَذلتَyou forsook الوَليَّthe ally لِكأسِfor the cup of الحِمامِdeath
وَلَمand not تكyou were ياO ابنَson of عُمَيرٍUmayr خَذولاone who forsakes
You forsook your ally for the cup of death,
You disappointed the ally at the chalice of pigeons,
Yet you were not, O son of Umayr, one to forsake.
And you were not, O son of Umayr, disappointing.
وأَيَّمتَand you widowed مِنّاfrom among us الَّتيthe woman who لَمdid not تَلِدgive birth
كيتمِlike the orphaning of بَنيكyour sons وَكُنتَand you were الخَليلاthe beloved companion
And you widowed the woman among us who had borne no children,
And which day of ours that did not give birth,
As your sons were orphaned—and you had been her beloved.
Did you orphan your children, and you were the friend.
وَكُنتَand you were لَناfor us جَبلاًa mountain مَعقِلاًa stronghold
وَعِندَand at المَقامَةthe assembly بُرداًa cloak جَميلاًbeautiful
And you were a mountain for us, a stronghold,
And you were for us a impregnable mountain,
And at the assembly, a beautiful cloak.
And at the station, a beautiful coldness.
وَتفديand you ransom بِمالِكَwith your wealth أَموالَناour wealth
فَلاso not يَحسَبُreckon الناسُpeople فيناamong us بَخيلاa miser
And with your wealth you would ransom ours,
And you ransom with your money our monies,
So people reckoned none among us a miser.
So people do not consider us miserly.
