إِنْif تَذْكُرواyou recall يَوْمَthe day of القَرِيِّal-Qariyy فإنَّهُthen indeed it is
بَواءٌan equal recompense بأيامٍagainst days كثيرٍgreat عَديدُهاtheir number
If you recall the day of al-Qariyy, it is
If you recall the day of Al-Qar, verily it
Counterbalanced by days, many in number.
Brought many days of woe and sorrow unending.
فنحُنfor we أَبَحْناwe overran بالشَّخِيصةِat al-Shakhīṣah واهِناًWāhin
جَهاراopenly فجِئْناthen we came بالْنِّساءِwith the women نَقودُهاwe lead them
For we overran Wāhin at al-Shakhīṣah
For we assaulted with barely a fight,
Openly; then we came with the women, leading them.
Fleeing openly, the women our only defending.
ويومَand on the day of كَراءٍKarāʾ قدindeed تَداركَcaught up with رَكْضُناour galloping
بَنيthe sons of مالكٍMālik والخَيْلُwhile the horses صُعْرٌturned aside خدُودُهاtheir cheeks
And on the day of Karāʾ, our galloping overtook
And the day of Kara when we were put to flight,
Banū Mālik, while the horses' cheeks were turned aside.
The clan of Malik and steeds with cheeks a-bending.
ويومَand on the day of الأَراكاتِal-Arākāt (the arāk trees) اللواتيwhich تَأَخَّرتْfell behind
سرَاةُthe chiefs of بنيthe sons of لهبانَLahbān يَدْعوcalls out شَريدُهاtheir fugitive
And on the day of al-Arākāt, where there fell behind
And the day of Al-Arakat where we were late,
The chiefs of Banū Lahbān, their fugitive calling out.
As the Sa'ra clan called, their fugitive herding.
ونحنُand we صبحْناَwe attacked at dawn الحيَّthe clan يومَon the day of تَنُومَةٍTanūmah
بِملْموُمةٍwith a massed force يُهوِيbrings down الشجاعَthe brave man وئِيدُهاits heavy tread
And we attacked the clan at dawn on the day of Tanūmah
While we at dawn feasted the living at Tinuma,
With a massed force whose heavy tread fells the brave.
With spears overthrowing the valiant and wretched.
ويومَand on the day of شَرومٍSharūm قدindeed تركْناwe left عِصابِةًa band
لدىَby جانبthe side of الطَّرْفاءِthe tamarisks حُمْراًred جُلودُهاtheir skins
And on the day of Sharūm, we indeed left a band
And the day of Sharoom when we left a band,
Beside the tamarisks, their skins red.
By the hillside with red camels their necks outstretching.
فماso never رغَمِتْit was humbled حِلْفاًI swear لأمرby something يُصيبُهاthat befalls it
منof الذُّلِّdisgrace إلاexcept نَحْنُwe رغماhumiliation نَزِيدُهاwe add to it
So never, I swear, is it humbled by anything that befalls it
No disgraceful defeat has e'er put us to shame,
Of disgrace, without us heaping more humiliation upon it.
Except by our own acts we increased its upending.
