    If my wealth dwindles, I grow in spirit more independent

    of others; the self-sufficient man is content with what he has gained.

    وفي الصبر عِزٌّ للضَّراعَةِ قاطعُ

    And in relinquishing hope of their wealth, you find relief;

    and in patience, dignity that puts an end to abject pleading.

    And I surely preserve, when hardship touches me,

    a cheerful face when faces grow worn.

    So I spare my people's soil—though, had I wished, they would have given—

    when the persistent, abject suppliant complains,

    for fear of being hated when I come visiting,

    while hopes of gain draw me back toward men.
