أَلاAh! هَلْhas ...? أتىreached ذاتَthe woman with الخواتِمthe rings فَرِّتْيmy escape
عَشِيَّةَthat evening بَيْنَbetween الجُرْفِthe escarpment والنَّجْدِand the upland مِنْof يَعْرِYaʿr
Ah, has news of my escape reached the woman with the rings,
That evening between the escarpment and the upland of Yaʿr,
عَشِيَّةَthat evening كادتْnearly عامِرٌʿĀmir يَقْتُلونَنيthey kill me
لَدىbeside طَرفِthe edge السَّلْماءِal-Salmāʾ رَاغِيَةِthe bellow البَكْرِof the young male camel
The evening when ʿĀmir nearly killed me,
By the edge of al-Salmāʾ, Rāghiyat al-Bakr—“the young camel’s bellow”?
فماso ... not الظَّبْيُthe gazelle أَخْطَتْmissed خِلفَةَُthe talon الصَقْرِof the falcon رجْلَهits leg
وقدand indeed كادَnearly يلقىit meets الموْتَdeath فيin خِلْفَةِthe talon الصَّقْرof the falcon
No gazelle whose leg the falcon’s talon missed,
Though it had nearly met death in the falcon’s talon,
بِمِثْليlike me غداةَthat morning القوْمthe men بينَbetween مقُنَّعa helmeted man
وآخرand another كالسَّكْرانِlike a drunken man مُرْتَكِزٍbraced يَفْريhe slashes
Was my equal that morning among the men, between one helmeted
And another, like a drunken man, braced and slashing.
