Come, you two, cheer me قَبْلَbefore نَوْحِlamentation النَّوادبِmourning women
وقبلَand before بكاءِweeping المُعْوِلاتِwailing women القَرائِبِkinswomen
Come, you two, cheer me before the mourning women's lament,
Blame me before the wailing of mourning doves
And before the weeping of wailing kinswomen,
And before the crying of grieving relatives
وقبلand before ثوائىmy dwelling فيin تُرابٍdust وَجْندَلٍand stones
وقبْلَand before نُشُوزِthe rising of النَّفْسِthe soul فَوْقَabove التَّرائِبِthe chest bones
And before I lie in dust and stones,
And before my wandering in dust and mire
And before the soul rises above the bones of the chest.
And before the rebellion of my soul over obstacles
فِإِنْso if تَأْتِنيcomes to me الدُّنْياthe world بِيَوْمٍwith a day فُجَاءَةٍsuddenness
تَجِدْنيit will find me وقَدْand already قَضَّيْتُI have fulfilled مِنْهاfrom it مَآرِبيmy desires
So if the world brings me a day without warning,
For if worldly life comes to me suddenly one day
It will find me having already gained from it what I desired.
It will find me having already passed my tribulations
