    You surpassed mankind in glory that endures without limit;

so it had no beginning, and will endure without end.

You were created as your own nature willed—that nature

to which generosity came, saying 'Be!'—and it became peerless.

And you came into the world as eminence desired,

renewing your favors many times beyond what you first bestow.

And you stretch forth, more bountiful than a cloud's skin,

fingers that teach the rain how to beg for gifts.

Yet among men are those whose petitioners fare

like one trying to draw water from solid stone.

O wearer of lordship's mantle, there is no fragrance

of glory that does not dwell in that mantle.

Blessed are you—a single man who encompassed all time

in a mantle of eminence, enfolding mankind in its cool comfort.

Chief of wisdom, the east wind has never perfumed its bosom

with a scent sweeter than your perfume and incense.

They say, 'Eminence built your house within the world.'

I said, 'Rather, in my view, the world was built within it.'

We spoke falsely: here is the Riḍwān of your cheerful welcome, reporting,

declaring of it that it is the Paradise of eternity.

    وأعجبُ شيءٍ قسمة الجوهر الفرد

    Thus the virtues have shared out from you their singular essence;

and strangest of all is dividing an indivisible atom.

Are you not of that people whose newborn

is marked out for eminence as an infant, still in the cradle?

For they were cradled only in the lap of noble headship,

nor ever suckled anything but the forbearance of sound judgment.

So, O summits of the enemies, bow down to the earth!

And, O eye of theirs, retreat into the eyelid's sheath!

God unsheathed, in the hand of noble headship, its sword,

and said, 'Judge as you wish, O keen-edged blade!

    And behold the enemies' eyes and their hearts;

so take whatever you choose from those who harbor rancor.'

And among what lends the earth pride over heaven,

and makes its pebbles outshine the stars of good fortune,

the choicest of those He selected from glory's lineage.

God the Great has given you leave to raise them,

and you are lamps by which people seek guidance.

Praise and acclaim have prayed there toward your face,

for within them you are the qibla of gratitude and praise.
