Whenever the one who loves you draws closer,
The more the lover draws near in affection
You draw farther away from him and shun him more.
The further you distance yourself and avoid

A trait that nobility does not approve
A trait not befitting the exalted
In one who is a Hashimite to the core.
One who was the cream of the Hāshims

O valiant one, in the clay of loftiness took hold
O the one whose essence was created from the clay of nobility
Your ancestral roots; noble they grew, and noble you.
Whose lineage is pure and good

Do not sever these bonds
Today is not a day without ties of kinship.
Today is not a day for lineages

How can you avert your eyes, having heard a reproach
How can you turn away when you've heard reproach
In which I did not think I had strayed from what was right?
My enemy has not wronged me in this

Or do you think I spoke improperly in it?
Or do you think I have erred in my address

From you!—so that silence became your answer?
Such silence from you would be an answer

With one letter of reproach following another.

You are far above any hint of suspicion
That your virtues might turn into their opposites.
In your nature ever turning capricious

Toward foes, to be anything but sweet.
To be anything but torment to enemies

You have pained me, oh lone confidant
So I have woven verse about you in reproach.
So I have woven into you this reproach

It was out of love, then, that he complained; and the most hopeless complainer
A loving heart complained and despaired
Is one who treats afflictions with his reproach.
Who will heal with his reproach the wounds
