Upon every valley, tears from your eye drip.

Yet not every valley you have crossed is al-Muʿarraf.

I think you no longer recognize the dwellings; turn aside with me,

Perhaps you will recognize al-ʿAmiriyya's home.

I implore you: have you left any place for tears

On earth where you pour down rain and drip?

All this, though you have shed no tears; rather,

Your heart's blood is shed from the lids of your eyes.

So do not be one who casts patience onto bare ground

When the gray dove begins to call in the thicket.

    وهل يَستوي يوماً صحيحٌ ومُدنَف

    That is not grief, that her lament should grieve you;

Can the healthy and the wasting ever be alike?

Have you not seen that she sheds no bereaved mother's tear,

Nor has her united company been torn apart?

She wears a necklace of adornment around her neck,

While around yours a collar of sorrow is wound.

When she sings melodiously above the arak trees,

You lament the dead, and your ribs tremble.

I would shield you from a dwelling unsettling your composure,

One effaced, now a haunt for wild beasts.

    فليس يردُّ الذاهبين التلهُّف

    So do not weep with longing among its ruins;

Longing cannot bring back those who have gone.

Had one who departed ever returned through regret,

I would excuse you; but regret avails nothing.

Indeed, one distraught, given to lamentation and weeping

For any but al-Zahra's sons, deserves blame and rebuke.

May my soul and my forefathers ransom those unyielding souls

Whom a pampered man makes drink the cup of death.

Their blood is shed unavenged by the swords of error,

And God's injunctions concerning them are annulled and erased.

They are the best of all beneath the sky,

And the noblest and most exalted of those above it.

They dispel calamity; no sword in battle

Is keener-edged than they, nor more finely honed.

When the caller summoned them on a day when, from the blood of the

Horsemen, the mouths of blades were sipping,

They answered with bright blades; fate stood obedient,

Ever directed wherever those blades willed.

Beneath them appointed deaths moved, and above them

A banner of mighty victory fluttered.

Their assaults fill time itself with wonder,

From them lofty mountains crumble, and the earth trembles.

I marvel at men whose coats of mail are filled with death,

And whose two cloaks are filled with piety and self-restraint.

The ghoul of death devours them, and in the morning

The wind of calamities rages over their ruins.

Noble men, they died between spearheads and blades,

Still noble, while the day of battle was dark with dust.

Guides who answered God's caller, and he led

Them to palaces loftier than the summits of the stars.

I never imagined, in fate's vicissitudes, fate itself struck down,

Or mountains of death blasted apart by death.

May my soul ransom heads descended from Luʾayy, whose noses

Have scorned humiliation for as long as time has been.

They refused to smell humiliation, until they were severed

On a day when the tawny shafts of spears shattered.

    فكيف غدا فيها ينوءُ مثقّف

    The mountains did not stagger in all their might;

How, then, does a straightened spear now strain beneath them?

O you who announce the death of creation's soul, proceed gently:

Creation's soul is close to perishing.

Each of them is certain that his resurrection has begun,

As though you announce every living being dead and cry it aloud.

    ويا طالبَ الإِحسانِ لا متعطّف

    O seeker of goodness, its roots have been severed;

O seeker of beneficence, none remains to show compassion.

Take heed: tell the wayfarers, 'Now despair!'

For he who cared for you and showed you kindness has died.

Despair, children of hope: there is no benefactor

For you, and for the oppressed none to do justice.

What soul does not perish of sorrow

For them, and what heart is not destroyed by grief?

O shelter of night travelers, when their star is gone,

They stumble in a wilderness and stray from the path.

Alas for the dawn of faith, on the day when

The suns of guidance were folded from its horizon, leaving it dark.

Alas for the sons of ʿAdnan, on the day their leader's

Blood dripped from the Mashrafi swords.

Let the swift racehorses cast off their reins:

After al-Husayn they have no one to guide them.

Let the Mashrafi swords weep for a mighty lion,

Who wears them thin on fierce warriors' lives amid battle's terror.

He brings them back quenched with their blood,

And leads them to drink, thirsty and yearning.

Let the Samhari spears mourn a lion,

Who shatters them against the chests of armored men.

By God, what a calamity! For it, every soul

May rightly perish of agonizing grief.

I swear that none established error except those

Who unjustly assumed rule over the Chosen One's community.

The day they advanced in aggression upon Fatim's house,

Their troops came marching at al-Ghadiriyya.

Her son's killing dates from the day her ribs were crushed,

And from her violation the violation of the Fatimas is known.

From the day they led the pure Haydar away, they had already set out

With the women as captives, whose lot was anguish.

Who will tell the Chosen One that the remnant

Of God, the young al-Sajjad, trudges in fetters?

Who will tell al-Zahra that her daughters

Are beset by disasters and calamities?

    فمن بَلدٍ أضحت لآخرَ تُقذف

    The enemies parade them through every town;

From one town they are cast into another.

When they see the children, their faces disheveled,

And their color snatched away by the shock of disaster,

Grief surges and they weep; yet, because of the foes,

They fearfully hold back the tears of both eyes.

May my soul ransom the Fatimi women, who have come

In captivity to seek compassion from those who show none.

Since they brought them openly out of their veiled chambers,

On an evening with no protector to defend and shelter them,

They hid in a curtained chamber of their exalted worth,

Draped with the awe of God's lights.

Their tragedy has torn livers apart with grief,

And left the entrails fluttering and trembling.

To you, sons of al-Zahra, these radiant wonders,

Embroidered with fair hope and woven in bright patterns.

Through them I hope, on the day of my resurrection,

To be honored by nearness to you, my masters.

God's blessing be upon you as long as a bird yearns

In a nest, and as long as Mina and al-Mukhayyif endure.
