Thus death enters the lions' forest,
Thus does death creep into the lair of the black lions
And Radwa is buried in the depths of graves.
And Rizwa is buried in the belly of graves
كذاthus يُستباحis violated حريمُthe sanctuary of العُلىglory

Thus the sanctuary of glory is violated,
Thus is the sanctuary of the exalted violated
And the full moons of guidance fall to the earth.
And the houses of guidance collapse into the dust

My life be ransom for him whose kin inherited from him
By my life, for those left with no mourners
Nothing but eminence and firmly built glory.
Except glory and enduring monuments

And the great bowls of hospitality were overturned after him,
The eyelids of the villages weep for him after
And their fires were consigned to extinction.
And their fires are extinguished into stillness

ليومكَyour day has هولٌterror كيومlike the day of الورودarrival; entry
O ally of bounty and brother of generosity,
I swear by the dew and intimate of forgiveness
Your day holds terror like the Day of Arrival.
Yours was a terrible day, like the day of roses

ولكنَّbut صبريَmy patience عينُthe very الفقيدthing lost
May life-giving rain water you: you are not the one lost,
The snakes were watered, you were not the deceased
But my patience is the very thing that is lost.
But my patience was the eye of the deceased

So may I never say to life after you, 'Be sweet,'
So I no longer said to life “welcome”
Nor say to the clouds after you, 'Pour generously.'
Nor to the clouds “give freely” after you

Indeed, this newly won glory of yours has borne witness
For your glory pointed this place
To that ancestral glory of your people.
To the ancient glory of your people

The sons of Hashim are necklaces, and you
The Hashimites, they are like beads
Are the central jewel among those necklaces.
And you were the thread between those beads

From a man by arms or numbers,
From a man, in periods or time

Young men would have risen to shield you from death,
Your chivalry would have stood up to the calamity
Who are slighted when likened to lions.
Young lions that, when likened to the black lions

Radiant of face—and their swords
The brightness of their faces and their swords
Are forged from death, not from iron.
Cast not from iron but from death

And deadly fates go forth upon their spears,
And by their spears the deaths
Poised amid red and black.
Become streets between red and black

But death has no preventing
For whomever it seeks, whether masters or slaves.
For those of masters or slaves it sought

Condolences, Abu Salih, do not agonize

For your forbearance is more firmly rooted than the mountains,
For your forbearance is firmer than firmaments
And it has no equal in existence.
And has no equal in existence

Your neighbors vie in glory
But you outstripped them by a great distance.
But you outpaced them to distant heights

So their standing fell into decline,
Thus did their status go into decline
While your standing rose above theirs.
While yours from theirs continues rising

No new day passed upon you
Without your showing a new excellence.
Except you appeared with new favor
لئنif indeed ساءكhas grieved you الدهرُTime فيover جعفرٍJa'far
فإنَّthen indeed الإِساءةَill-treatment شأنُthe way of العبيدslaves

If Time has grieved you over Ja'far,
If time wronged you through Ja'far
Then ill-treatment is the way of slaves.
Then wrongdoing is the way of slaves
