طواكمit folded you away وعنديand with me منof شمائلكمyour virtues نشرُfragrance
O our beloved ones, will time bring you back?
Oh beloved friends, will the days bring you back?
It folded you away, yet your virtues' fragrance remains with me.
I yearn for you though your likeness remains with me.
سلامٌpeace علىupon تلكthose المحاسنbeauties إنَّهاindeed, they
مضتthey passed فمضىso passed فيin إثرهاtheir wake الزمنُtime النضرُfresh and radiant
Peace upon those beauties, for they
Greetings to those beautiful faces that are gone,
Passed away, and the radiant days passed in their wake.
Their splendid time has passed fleetingly.
لعمريby my life لئنif indeed قدalready أقفرgrew desolate الجزعُthe valley bend منكمwithout you
فربعthen the dwelling of الأسىsorrow منfrom بعدكمafter you طللٌa ruin قفرُbarren
By my life, if the valley bend has grown deserted without you,
Though grief may seem empty without you,
Then sorrow's dwelling after you is a barren ruin.
In your absence, sorrow itself is desolate.
أشتاقI yearn إليكمfor you كلَّماwhenever عنappears َّ بارقٌa lightning flash
وآيةُand the sign of شوقيmy longing أنَّthat دمعيmy tears لهfor it قطرُrain
I yearn for you whenever a lightning flash appears,
Whenever lightning flashes, I yearn for you,
And my longing's sign is that my tears are its rain.
My tears of longing are proof of my ache.
ولاand not أنشقI inhale الأرواحَthe breezes إلاَّexcept as غلالةa thin garment
لتبردَto cool أحشائيmy innards وهلand can يبردcool الجمرُthe embers
And I inhale the breezes only as a thin garment,
Only the agony of separation rends souls,
To cool my innards—but can embers cool?
To cool my burning heart, but will embers cool?
وكنتَand I used to أعدُّI deem الهجرَestrangement لاno شيءthing فوقهabove it
إلىuntil أنthat أتىcame ماwhat هانbecame slight منfrom دونهbeneath it الهجرُestrangement
And I once deemed estrangement the worst of all,
I thought nothing surpassed estrangement,
Until there came what made estrangement seem slight beside it.
Until what paled beside it came to pass.
فأصبحتso I became لاnot أعلامُthe heights of سلعSalʿ تشوقنيstir my longing
ولاnor يتصبَّانيentices me بهاin them ماwhat حوىheld خدرُa curtained chamber
So now the heights of Salʿ no longer stir my longing,
No signs of loved ones kindle longing in me,
Nor does what a curtained chamber holds there entice me.
Nor does the past in my mind’s eye flow.
وكيفand how وفقدانand the loss of الشبابyouth فقدتكمI lost you
وتلكَand that حياةٌa life لاnot يُحبُّis desired لهاfor it عمرُa lifespan
And how could they, when losing you meant losing youth?
Without you, youth itself has gone,
And such a life is not one anyone wishes to prolong.
A life without which no age endures.
ولمَّاand when تجاذبناكمُwe tugged at you أناI والردىand Death
رجعتI returned برغميagainst my will عنكمaway from you ويديand my hand صفرُempty
And when Death and I tugged at you between us,
You and fate pulled me from you,
I returned from you against my will, empty-handed.
I left you though my hand was empty.
وكمand how many منكمamong you منof واضحradiant الوجهthe face أدرِجتْwas wrapped
لهfor him صورةٌa form فيin البُردthe mantle لمdid not يحكهاmatch it البدرُthe full moon
And many a radiant-faced one among you lay wrapped:
Many a radiant face fate obscured,
A form in the mantle—not even the full moon could match it.
The full moon could not touch such beauty.
وكافورةٍand a camphor-like woman للحسنِof beauty أضحتbecame بزعمهمas they claimed
تعطّرis perfumed بالكافورِwith camphor وهيwhile she لهfor it عطرُfragrance
And many a camphor-like beauty became, they claimed,
Some called camphor the essence of beauty,
Perfumed with camphor, though she was its fragrance.
It borrows fragrance, but beauty is its own scent.
ليfor me اللهُGod بعدafter اليومtoday منwho ليfor me بقربكمwith nearness to you
وأبعدُand the farthest غادٍdeparting traveler منone who أتىhas come دونهbefore him القبرُthe grave
I have God from this day on; who can bring me near you?
May God grant me after this day one near you,
And the farthest traveler is one cut off by the grave.
And distance those whom the grave has taken.
قفواstop زوِّدوناgive us provisions إنَّماonly هيit ساعةٌan hour
ووعدand the promise of التلاقيmeeting بينناbetween us بعدهafter it الحشرُthe gathering at resurrection
Stop, give us parting provisions—it is but an hour,
Pause, and stock us, for this is but an hour,
And our promised reunion afterward is at the Gathering.
Reunion's promise comes beyond the tomb.
رحلتمyou departed وقلبيand my heart شطرُهhalf of it فيin ظعونكمyour departing caravans
وللوجدِand for anguish باقٍremaining منهof it فيin أضلعيmy ribs شطرُa half
You departed, and half my heart is in your caravans;
You left and half my heart still dwells in your abodes,
And half remains within my ribs, given over to grief.
While longing keeps the other half in my chest.
وشيَّعتكمand I saw you off والدمعand the tears يومَon the day of نواكمyour departure
غريقانboth drowned فيهin it خلفكمbehind you أناI والصبرُand patience
And I saw you off; in tears, on the day of your departure,
I bade you farewell as tears drowned us both,
Behind you, patience and I were both drowned.
On that day of sorrow, I and patience wept.
وأعهدُand I remember خصراًa waist يشتكيcomplaining of ثقلَthe weight of ردفهits buttocks
فوارحمتاso, oh my pity تحتَbeneath الرشاthe rope لكfor you ياO خصرُwaist
And I recall a waist complaining of the weight of its hips;
My waist complains of the burden on its back,
Ah, pity for you beneath the rope, O waist!
O waist, have mercy beneath this load!
ولمَّاand when وفقناwe were enabled للفراقfor parting وقُرِّبتand was brought near
حمولةُa beast of burden بينٍparting لاnot يكلُّtires لهاfor it ظهرُa back
And when we were enabled to part, and there was brought near
When we met for parting and the camel's litter was laid,
A carrier of parting whose back never tires,
Its unwearying back bore the pain of goodbye.
ربطتI bound بكفيَّwith both my hands الضلوعthe ribs علىaround حشاًinnards
تكادalmost خفوقاًfluttering أنto يطيرَflies away بهاwith them الذعرُterror
I bound my ribs with both hands around my innards,
I clasped my ribs against the panic in my breast
Which, fluttering, terror almost sent flying.
That almost made it take flight in dread.
كأنَّas though نياطthe tether of القلبthe heart شدَّتtugged حمولكمyour laden beasts
بهat it وبكمand at you عنّيaway from me مذsince انفصلdeparted السفرُthe caravan
As though your laden beasts had tugged upon my heartstring,
It was as if my heart's reins drew your luggage to it,
Drawing it and you away from me since the caravan departed.
Binding me to you since our travel parted.
فكمso how many خلفكمbehind you ليfor me أنَّةٌa moan ماdid not لوتturn بكمyou back
علىdespite أنَّهاthat it قدindeed لانَsoftened شجواًin sorrow لهاfor it الصخرُthe rock
And many a moan of mine behind you failed to turn you back,
Without you, how my cooings find no comfort!
Though even stone had softened for it in sorrow.
Even rocks are worn smooth by their laments.
I shall weep for you ماas long as ناحَlaments فيin الوكرِthe nest طائرٌa bird
فطائرُfor the bird of قلبيmy heart بعدكمsince you left ماnot لهit has وكرُa nest
I shall weep for you as long as a bird laments in its nest,
I will mourn you as long as a bird cries in its nest,
For since you left, the bird of my heart has no nest.
For my heart, left without you, has no home.
