كسر الموتُ جفنَه عن شَباكا
O Husayn, since zeal for honor unsheathed you,
More beautiful than preserving decorum
Death lowered its eyelid before your keen edge.
Is breaking the eyelids of death with spears

Seeing you desperately he was terrified
That, in terror, it wished it had never seen you.
Wishing in fear he had not seen you

O slain one! No cloud of bow-wood
O you who died but no spring of tragedy
Has a blood-avenger used to proclaim your death with its sharp points.
Wept for you, you who had a protector avenging you

And to this day no close friend has wept for you
And until now no intimate has cried for you
With a sword, in tears of blood, and so quenched your thirst.
With a sword that shed the blood of your enemies

The Banu Hashim are blamed after a day
On which the tawny lances drank your blood.
In which the tips of spears drank your blood
