Then my feet have not walked the paths of glory.

I have a secret will that I do not reveal
until the keen Indian swords divulge it.
Until the Indian swords reveal it.

Glory did not suckle me as a pure son whose pearls
if my spear remains thus, weaned.
Would drip if my spear remained bent like this.

To my tribe whom I praised, their feet - not their peaks -
of old for their blows by battle—not by the heads they struck.
Were the place of glorious feats.

I will suckle the breast of war, which is a spear
its milk drawn from fierce warriors' chests—and that milk is blood.
Whose milk is from the chests of the brave and is blood.

Why should I make peace with a people whose weakness
May the hand of time grant me no peace if they go unharmed.
Does not make me safe if they are at peace?

O son of exalted ones, they make death sit
by high resolve, amid terror, to face sword-edges!
When you rouse it before the terrified faces of the resolute.

Your horses are ready for battle when called
and the bright swords have brought weariness upon their scabbards.
And the whites of them have shed their scabbards out of boredom.

These are the warriors! See their attacking determination
And these foreheads—will no whetted blade brand them?
And their furrowed brows as they press on!

Unless a flood of copious blood flows over it.

Flaming lightning bolts will strike the heads of the people
from his hand—the sword they know.
From his palm - it is the sword they knew!

By a blow for the sake of religion today - it will judge him.

So will you not take revenge, O avenger?

While you - you! - and they are in what they have committed!

So how can you leave behind for them a father or mother?

And no! By your forbearance - the people have not exercised forbearance!

The one who carries your mother's foot and dropped it in hatred
and weaned your grandfather's infant with death's arrow.
And your grandfather's infant with the arrow of misfortune they weaned!

This sacred month has come to you screaming
at what they deemed lawful within it, its sacred days.
At what they considered permissible in its sacred days.

Whose continuous mourning in the ears of time is deafening.

Maidens have grieved, and before them are youths who drank
the keen sword-edges drank from before her eyes.
From their slaughter the cups of their eyes, the Indian swords.

parched of heart, thronging death's watering-place.
Their flaming hearts crowded upon the roses of calamity.

Watered only by blood, and only by tears of sadness,
only by blood and streaming tears.
Consumed by their patience beneath the resolve generously.

Their noble endurance beneath the sword-edges consumed them,
And wading into the abundant, billowing sea of death
until they died, their death filled with nobility.
Whose waves are the whites along with the skulls, churning.

And those who plunged into death's overflowing depths,
They walked to war like preying beasts
its waves the bright blades, crashing against heads.
So they contended with death in it and the spear was bent.

They walked to war as beasts of prey advance upon it,
There is no shame the day of children being killed
and wrestled death there, while the spears were thickets.
With patience, by resolute women whose feet did not stand firm.

Nor was there shame, on the day of al-Taff, in their being killed
For war - you know that if they die in it, indeed
steadfastly in a battle where no foot could stand firm.
The swords, not the resolves, have died in it.

For war knows that, if they died in it, then surely
I mourn them for the sheaths of the horses, if they are ridden,
their swords died there, not their resolve.
Their heads have not curbed the horse’s determination to gallop.

And for the swords - for when death is the opponent
no bridles could curb their resolve;
In their sharp edges, it and the souls contend.

and for the swords, when deadly death came
Perplexed women whose eyes
to contend upon their edges with souls;
Were frightened the next morning when they swooped down upon their shelters.

and for bewildered women whose eyes the people sent darting
They were in a place where their people had encamped around them
with terror that morning, when they stormed their curtained shelter.
A canopy whose domain was made inviolable by their glory.

They had dwelt where their people had pitched around them
It is almost as if, out of awe, even the angels would not circulate around it
a pavilion whose ground their might made sacred.
If they were not servants.

Such was its awe that scarcely anyone could circle it,
So she was exposed before the hands of the people, distraught,
not even the angels, were they not its servants.
Taken captive with no one in whom she can seek refuge.

To her people, and her desolation filled with embers.

To zeal - they were not oppressed or exploited.

for honor's defense, neither wronged nor oppressed!
They do not age, and aging is the antithesis of glory.

they did not grow old; old age was for the fearful.
They drew near - and elegant form has carried us.

With a care that squeezes the ribs and resolutions.

Or has it not felt my rebuke's sting in its last spark of life?
Where is the gallantry? Or where is the preservation?
For my words have fallen from my mouth as embers.
Does the honor of lineage and generosity now refuse?
أينwhere الشهامةgallantry أمor أينwhere الحفاظthe defense of honor أماwill not
أين الشهامة أم أين الحفاظ أما
يأبىrefuse لهاfor it شرفُthe nobility الأحسابِof lineage والكرمand generosity
يأبى لها شرفُ الأحسابِ والكرم
Where is gallantry, and where the defense of honor? Will not
Their free women are taken captive while children watch, distraught,
its noble ancestry and generosity refuse this?
And they were not wearing the dust of death as a veil!

تُسبى حرائرها بالطفّ حاسرةً
ولمand not تكنhas it been بغُبارin the dust الموتof death تلتثمُveiling its face
ولم تكن بغُبار الموت تلتثمُ
Its freeborn women are taken captive at al-Taff, bareheaded,
For whom are the loosing of the horses prepared if they refrain
while it has not veiled itself in the dust of death.
From a stance in which the inviolable was violated?
لمنfor whom أُعدَّتwere readied عتاقُthe thoroughbreds الخيلamong horses إنif قعدتit stayed idle
لمن أُعدَّت عتاقُ الخيل إن قعدت
عنfrom موقفٍa stand هُتكتwere violated منهاof it بهin it الحرمthe sanctities
عن موقفٍ هُتكت منها به الحرم
For whom were the thoroughbred horses readied, if it stayed idle
So what is your excuse, O Fahrs, that you do not shine
before a stand where its sanctities were violated?
With the whites striking or with the dark-skinned crumbling?
فماso what اعتذارُكِis your excuse ياO فهرٌFihr ولمand not تثبيyou sprang forth
فما اعتذارُكِ يا فهرٌ ولم تثبي

بالبيض تُثلم أو بالسمر تنحطم
What excuse have you, O Fihr, when you did not spring forth
Yes, your women have shaken you with blame
with bright swords to be notched, or dusky spears to be shattered?
While you are in a slumber beneath the soil, decaying.
أجلyes نساؤكِyour women قدindeed هزَّتكِhave shaken you عاتِبةًin reproach
أجل نساؤكِ قد هزَّتكِ عاتِبةً
وأنتِwhile you منfrom رقدةٍa slumber تحتbeneath الثرىthe soil رممcrumbling remains
وأنتِ من رقدةٍ تحت الثرى رمم
Yes, your women have shaken you with reproach,
So let your neck turn away from you today, disappointed,
while you, asleep beneath the earth, are crumbling remains.
For your singing has not prevented the pelting you with stones.
فلتُلفتso let them turn الجيدَthe neck عَنكaway from you اليومtoday خائبةًdisappointed
فلتُلفت الجيدَ عَنك اليوم خائبةً
فماfor what غناؤكِyour help حالتhave stood دونكِin the way to you الرجمthe burial cairns
فما غناؤكِ حالت دونكِ الرجم
Let them turn their necks away from you today, disappointed;
for what help can you give? Burial cairns bar the way to you.
