ضنًىa wasting sickness شفَّwasted جسميmy body وأقذىand irritated العيوناthe eyes
I have suffered from heartache and those who blame me
I have suffered from the blamers' rebuke and censure,
a wasting sickness that thinned my body and stung my eyes.
Which has pierced my body and pained my eyes.
فلمso I did not أدرِknow ماذاwhat بقلبيin my heart أمضَّmore painful
وجديmy heartache أمor عذلُthe reproach of العاذليناthe reproachers
So I could not tell what pained my heart more:
I know not if it was my passion or their reproof
my heartache or the reproach of those who blame me.
That has filled my heart with overwhelming pain.
ألائمتيO my reproacher بعضsome of هذاthis الملامthe blame
فالأمرfor the matter ليسis not كماas تزعميناyou claim
O my reproacher, a little less of this blame!
Do not blame me, reproachers, for this blame,
For matters are not as you claim.
For the matter is not as you claim.
ذرينيlet me أُدمِّيI make bleed غروبtear channels الجفونthe eyelids
وأستشعرand I clothe myself in الحزنgrief حيناًa time فحيناthen another time
Let me make the tear channels of my eyelids bleed,
Leave me to shed the tears from my eyes
and clothe myself in grief, time after time.
And feel the sorrow from time to time.
لقدindeed جذمsevered الدهرُTime يسرىthe left of يديَّmy two hands
فبانتso it parted وألحقand made follow فيهاin its fate اليميناthe right hand
Time has indeed severed my left hand,
Fate has amputated my right hand,
so it fell away, and he sent the right after it.
And soon afflicted my left hand too.
أصبراًMust I be patient? وإنسانُwhile the pupil of عينيmy eye يُسلُّis plucked out
بظفرby the claw of الردىdeath ساءَevil is ماwhat تأمريناyou command
Am I to be patient, while the pupil of my eye is plucked out
I am patient, though the human in my eyes
by death's claw? How ill is what you command!
Is tempted by the tricks of fate. Enough!
كفىit is enough حزناًas sorrow إنَّindeed جسميmy body أقامremained
وقلبيand my heart استقلَّdeparted معwith الظاعنيناthe departing travelers
It is sorrow enough: my body has remained,
My body has endured, and my heart
while my heart departed with those who journeyed away.
Has joined ranks against the criticizers.
أعينيَّO my two eyes شأنكماyour concern, both of you والدموعand tears
فماfor not يتركleaves الدهرُTime دمعاًa tear مصوناpreserved
O my two eyes, give yourselves to tears,
My eyes, let your tears flow,
for Time leaves no tear unshed.
As fate spares no tear unshed.
لهto him الذمُّblame بالأمسyesterday قدindeed بزَّنيhe robbed me
وشيمتهand his nature الغدرُtreachery علقاًa prized possession ثميناprecious
Shame upon him! Yesterday he robbed me—
Yesterday it glorified me,
treachery is his nature—of a precious treasure.
But today it shames me with precious gifts.
فغادرso he left حجريmy lap منهof him خميصاًempty
وبطنand the belly of الثرىthe earth منهwith him أمسىbecame بطيناfull-bellied
So he left my lap empty of him,
So it has left my chamber desolate
and the earth's belly became full of him.
And made my earthly abode a ruin.

And a branch that grew in the soil of high honor
A branch grew in the soil of glory,
and flourished for a time in the garden of glory
And for a time blossomed beautifully and gently,

But soon after it had shone for a while,
and delighting the eyes with beauty and tenderness.
And delighted all who saw it,
وكنتُand I would متىwhenever عنَّarose ليto me ذكرُهhis memory
أطلتُI prolonged عليهfor him البكاweeping والحنيناand yearning
And whenever his memory came to me,
Whenever I was reminded of it,
I would weep and yearn for him at length.
I would weep and ache from missing it.
مضىhe passed away ماnot نسيناهwe forgot him لكنْbut ثنىrepeated it
بآخرwith another يذكرناwho reminds us ماwhat نسيناwe forgot
He passed—we have not forgotten him—but Time struck again
What we had forgotten has gone,
with another who reminds us of what we forgot.
But what we remember returns to grieve us.
أهلتُI heaped عليهupon him ترابَthe soil of القبورthe graves
وعدتُand I returned أُكابدُI wrestle with داءَan ailment دفيناburied within
I heaped the soil of graves upon him,
I buried it in the dust of graves
and returned to wrestle with a buried sickness.
And now endure the pain of loss.
علىdespite أنَّنيthe fact that I لمnot أزلْceased منذfor سبعٍseven
أعدُّI count الشهورthe months لهfor him والسنيناand the years
Yet for seven years I had not ceased
For seven years now
counting the months and years for him.
I have counted the months and years for it.

وقلتُand I said يكونhe would be لبيباًwise فطيناkeen-witted
I discerned in him the marks of perfection,
I saw in it the signs of perfection
and said he would be wise and keen-witted.
And thought it would be intelligent and wise.

Then, when his promising traits heralded
But when its destiny gave me glad tidings
the fulfillment of what I hoped he would become,
That my hopes for it would be fulfilled,

and there arose, to support what I discerned in him,
And proofs arose of what I had perceived,
signs confirming my expectations of him,
Confirming my suspicions entirely,
رمتهstruck him المنونُFate بسهمwith the arrow of الحمامdeath
منfrom حيثwhere لاnot أتوقىI guard against المنوناFate
Fate struck him with the arrow of death,
Fate struck it down with an arrow
from where I did not guard against Fate.
When I least feared that fate.
فأصبحتُso I came to أسمحI give freely للتربto the dust فيهwith him
وكنتُand I had been علىregarding اللحظa glance فيهat him ضنيناjealously withholding
So I yielded him freely to the dust,
So I started sprinkling dust over it
though I had begrudged even a glance at him.
When just before I had held it dear.
بمنin whom أتعلَّلI find solace فيamid النائباتcalamities
إذاwhen غادرتنيthey leave me كئيباًdejected حزيناsorrowful
In whom can I find solace amid calamities,
In adversities, whom can I blame
when they leave me dejected and sorrowful?
When sorrow and grief have deserted me?
ومنand who مؤنسيmy comforter حيثُwhen ليلthe night of الخطوبcalamities
يمرُّpasses عليَّover me الهزيعthe night-watch الدجيناpitch-dark
And who will comfort me when the night of calamities
And who can comfort me in the night of woes
passes over me through the pitch-dark hours?
As they pass slowly by in the darkness?
فقلthen say للياليto the nights بلغتِyou have attained المنىthe wishes
وأدركتِand you obtained منِّيfrom me ماwhat تأمليناyou hope for
Then tell the nights: You have attained your wishes,
Say to these nights now that you have attained your goal,
and obtained from me what you hoped for.
And fulfilled what we wished of you,
لقدindeed كنتُI was بالأمسِyesterday ذاpossessing مقلتينtwo eyes

Indeed, yesterday I had two eyes,
Yesterday I had two eyes
with which I saw what gladdened the eyes.
With which I saw sights that delighted my eyes,

You put out the left with your arrow,
But with your arrow you have blinded
and how soon you had put out the right!
My right eye, and soon my left eye too.
قعدتُI sat بعمياءwith a blind eye مستصبحاًseeking light

I sat seeking light with a blind eye,
I have sat in blindness since dawn,
which shows me my white days as black.
With my white days showing me nothing.

And do not think that, when I complained
And think not that when I complained
of your treatment of me, I was helpless and submissive.
I was helpless and frail.
