كم مقاماتِ نُهًى حرَّرها
ليسnot فيهاin them للحريريِّfor al-Hariri مقامَهhis standing
ليس فيها للحريريِّ مقامَه
How many maqamas of wisdom he has penned,
How many stations of prohibition he wrote
in which al-Hariri has no standing!
In which al-Hariri had no place
وأنيقاتِand graceful works بهًىsplendor لوif شامَهاhe beheld them
وأنيقاتِ بهًى لو شامَها
جوهريُّthe jeweler الشعرِof poetry ماnot سامhe priced نظامهhis string of verse
جوهريُّ الشعرِ ما سام نظامه
And graceful works of splendor—had he beheld them,
And elegance of splendor, if he had perceived it
the jeweler of poetry would not have priced his own string of verse.
The essence of poetry is not what his system reached
