You bore witness for yourself that perfection

came with your soul on the day of its birth.

Just as the mother of glory testified for you

that you are the noblest of her children.

You suckled nobility in her lap,

and the purest of her cloaks enfolded you.

So your palm is the Kaaba of her bounty,

and your face the qibla of her seekers.

The guests at your sides are rivaled

by the stars of heaven in their numbers.

You entertain them, and with the coolness of conversation

dispel the heat of their livers.

Thus evening finds them with your cheerful welcome for their water,

and your gracious nature serving instead of their food.

A generous man’s deeds have rubbed in the dust

the noses of those who envy his noble acts.

And were your mind not a garden,

you would not have graced us with its roses.

With your fragrant breaths there flutters

above it the life-breath of its visitors.

Yours are the peerless daughters of verse,

both in their composition and in their recitation.

The budding-breasted maidens long to trace from them

    beauty’s embroidery upon their bodies.

For if they wore necklaces of its gilded verse,

it would adorn the silver of their necks.

And were they anointed with its musk,

they would toss their costly perfumes to their rivals.

And had their knot-tying women its magic,

they would undo with it the resolve of their lions.

So may you ever remain the delight of glory’s eye,

and lord of all her illustrious men.

For her, the cave of your might is safety for the terrified,

and your bounty the provider for her visitors.

And live on, O sea of generosity, for her sake,

for your bounty best slakes the thirst of those who come to her waters.
