    Leave my liver alone, and take my tears;

    for the herald of parting calls out to all.

    Not that I would spare my liver, but only

    that my ribs may find solace in loving you.

    the day of your parting called to it: 'Reveal it!'

    and lures him with a dazzling flash that brings no rain.

    Denied union with her, I ceased longing for her,

    and told her: 'Keep back from one who withholds!'

    بمدحِ محمدِ الحسنِ الصنيع

    إلى الندماءِ من زمن الربيع

    the spring of our age, and gentler in nature

    toward his boon companions than the season of spring;

    nurtured in noble virtues, a youth of lofty merit,

    who grew upon the peaks of exalted honor.

    The fingers of both his hands stream with bounty

    when the clouds' udders are dry.

    He clad his shoulders in fragrant wafts of glory,

    and told them: 'Spread your fragrance over humankind and jinn!'
