May the Creator preserve for you a friend true in affection,

Its cup was sweet to me and him long ago.

He kept twining his cord between us

Through union, until its nuptials ripened.

And it is as though one of my enviers—I seek protection for him

In God—were its lurking tempter, whispering in his presence.

So he dissuaded you—but from the dues of a friendship

Whose foundation has never weakened for me.

O you for whom I planted affection within my breast,

And for whom its saplings grew in sincerity.

You are those who call to God, lords of His creation,

Custodians of His religion's creed, its guardians.

And purified of all vile things,

Forever; so their stains do not touch you.

And revered: never did humankind stand tall

In your presence without its head being bowed.

And I see the noble as metals: their silver—

By your father!—is you; all others are their copper.

And you are indeed a fine halting-place for arriving hopes,

And the kindest of those for whom their saddlecloths are bound.

Those qualities—where is he who embodies their cheer?

Their friendliness used to dispel my loneliness.

Those generous deeds—where is their streaming rain?

Their thundering raincloud kept dyeing my courtyard.

How strange! I called on you while calamities chewed me,

And their molars met upon my last spark of life.

Yet you turned your understanding away from my message's words,

Professing it obscure, though you are its Iyas.

It came to you with its plea, and had no

Garment before you except its shame.

    فلأيّما سببٍ طواها ياسها

    It spread its pleas before you, with hope;

Then for what reason did its despair fold them away?

And you met it with rejection, so that

Its breaths all but set my heart ablaze.

An eye with which you watched over my love—for a time

I did not know how Time's eye could snatch it away.

Why do I rouse it to notice my need,

When estrangement makes its slumber sweet to it?
