People think that, through your favor

toward me, I have gained riches vast and ample.

And they spoke truly: how many favors you have

done me confirm what was said.

They saw my hope—may God bless it—

ever stretching farther through your bounties.

And they said, “You have built up the edifice of verse,

while your house remains a crumbling heap of sand.

You have those whose bounty makes light

for Time what once was a heavy burden.

Why not, then, plead with them on its behalf,

through a craftsman of praise who pours out wine?

If you lend it their generosity,

you secure a guarantor of its success.”

    So I said, “Spare me the counsel in your reproaches;

I have no mind to obey the reprover.

Enough for me is my name’s distinction through them,

even if my fortune keeps lamenting obscurity.

For stars may shine beside their full moon,

though nearness to it dooms them to fade.

If ever their generosity awakens toward me

and comes to me unbidden in abundance,

then my house will be restored,

and what was barren in it will flourish.

Otherwise, I shall keep my hopes curtailed,

and never be seen prolonging reproach.

Yet, if I wished to reproach them,

I would surely find the way to do so.

    فحاشاهمُ أن يَروني عَقيلا

    But each of them is a Murtada to me;

so far be it that they should see me as Aqil.”
