By your light, not by the piercing luminaries,

Al-Zawra's precinct shone on every side.

You rose within her like the full moon, leaving

No cause for heaven to boast of its stars over the earth.

You bestowed on her a robe of your splendor,

In which today she strutted like full-breasted maidens.

And you adorned her with a necklace of glory, stringing

Pearls in it for her—the pearls of noble virtues.

For you are but a sea of knowledge; in succession come

Its wonders, and the sea abounds in wonders.

And you are but a garden of excellence; speaking

Of its fragrance are the breaths of the east and south winds.

And you are but a gentle, steady rain, pouring down

With flowing bounty from divine grace.

A man of lofty resolves: were Time to contend with any,

They would turn it back with their least, its shoulders shattered.

Your glory rose above al-Jawza's crown, braiding

Its tresses from hers, lofty among tresses.

And one vied with you; we said to him, 'How can one who runs

On earth compare with the course of the piercing stars?'

Let hope's back rest from bearing you; none has reached

The station of the brilliant stars atop these backs.

Beyond you are mantles of lofty glory; never would

The Pleiades stretch toward them a grasping hand.

So, O son of Qadiri virtues, beyond counting

Are your virtues, baffling every reckoner.

    فحقُك أن تدعى بسيِّد غالب

    Through you we bested the proud, noble lords in lofty rank;

So it is your right to be called Sayyid Ghalib.

You delight in the brocade embroidered for you

By the craftswoman of rhymes, not a craftswoman among maidens.

So may you endure upon the Milky Way's crowns, trailing

Bordered mantles of glory with unsullied trains.
