أهذا نبيُّ الهُدى أحمدُ

أهذا نبيُّ الهُدى أحمدُ

وهذا الذي ضمَّنا المسجدُ

وهذا الذي ضمَّنا المسجدُ

Is this Ahmad, the Prophet of guidance,

Is this Ahmad, the Prophet of guidance?

and is this the one with whom the mosque brought us together?

And is this the mosque that gathered us?

من الدمع محمرَّةٌ أرضه

من الدمع محمرَّةٌ أرضه

وسقف السماء به أسودُ

وسقف السماء به أسودُ

Its floor is crimson from tears,

Its ground is reddened by tears,

and heaven’s vault is black because of him;

And heaven’s vault above it is black.

وجبريل إذ قامَ ينعى الحسين

وجبريل إذ قامَ ينعى الحسين

وتبكي الملائك إذ تنشدُ

وتبكي الملائك إذ تنشدُ

and Gabriel, when he arose, announcing the death of al-Husayn,

And Gabriel, as he rose to announce Husayn’s death,

and the angels weep as you recite?

And the angels weep as they chant.

نعم وأبيك بها أحمد

نعم وأبيك بها أحمد

وأملاك ربِّ السما تشهدُ

وأملاك ربِّ السما تشهدُ

Yes—by your father!—Ahmad is there,

Yes, by your father, Ahmad is there,

and the angels of heaven’s Lord bear witness.

And the angels of the Lord of heaven bear witness.

فما عذر عينكم في الجمود

فما عذر عينكم في الجمود

وعين الملائك لا تجمدُ

وعين الملائك لا تجمدُ

What excuse, then, have your eyes for remaining dry,

So what excuse have your eyes for remaining dry,

when the angels’ eyes do not run dry?

While the angels’ eyes do not remain dry?
