إليكم تُذلُّ النفسُ من بعد عزَّةٍ

إليكم تُذلُّ النفسُ من بعد عزَّةٍ

وليست تُذلُّ النفسُ إلاَّ لمن تهوى

وليست تُذلُّ النفسُ إلاَّ لمن تهوى

Before you the once-proud soul is humbled;

To you the soul is humbled after dignity

And the soul is humbled only before those it loves.

And the soul is not humbled except to whom it loves

فلا تُحوِجُوها بالسؤالِ لغيركم

فلا تُحوِجُوها بالسؤالِ لغيركم

فتسألَ مَن يسوى ومَن لم يكن يسوى

فتسألَ مَن يسوى ومَن لم يكن يسوى

So do not drive it to beg from anyone but you,

So do not compel it with questions for others

Lest it ask the worthy and the unworthy.

Lest it ask about who is equal and who was not equal
