so foolishly, when your time's good fortune is ill fortune?

And from calamities there is no escape for the

two kinds of beings—neither jinn nor humankind.

and in every mountain pass, a dwelling lies in ruins.

And the calamities of the days roam

east and west, their way is to snatch unawares.

And the gravest of them is the day of al-Tufuf; neither

imagination nor conjecture could conceive it.

A day when Abu al-Sajjad engendered it—

a raging war, before which the soul expires.

And its east and west turned black

with dust, until the sun died,

when his grandfather's freed host arrived

to fight him, led by a vile wretch.

He meets the spears with his chest, as though

on the day of battle his chest were a shield.

So the fierce warriors take comfort in flight, just as

his own soul takes comfort in death.

And each seeks to outstrip his companion

in flight, yet his head outstrips his body.

Their souls are for the keen blades, and their bodies

for wild beasts; no grave took pity on them.
