مرَّت بنا أمسِ تميميَّةٌ
ساحبةًtrailing أذيالهاher hems العاطرهfragrant
ساحبةً أذيالها العاطره
A woman of Tamim passed by us yesterday,
A Tammimi girl passed by us yesterday
trailing her fragrant hems.
Dragging her perfumed train behind
آنسةُamiable الدلّcoquetry تُرىshe seems وهيyet she إنif
آنسةُ الدلّ تُرى وهي إن
آنستَهاyou seek her company وحشيَّةٌwild نافرهskittish
آنستَها وحشيَّةٌ نافره
She seems amiable in her coquetry, yet if
Though she seemed to care for her lover's heart
you seek her company, she is wild and skittish.
A fierce, aloof girl she remained
قدindeed جَذبتshe drew أحشاءَناour entrails مذsince غدتshe began
قد جَذبت أحشاءَنا مذ غدت
ترمقناshe gazes at us بالنظرةwith the glance الفاترهlanguid
ترمقنا بالنظرة الفاتره
She drew our very entrails from the moment she began
She captivated our souls when she glanced
to gaze at us with her languid glance.
At us with her listless gaze
فانجَذَبتand so they were drawn منout of شغفٍardent longing نحوَهاtoward her
فانجَذَبت من شغفٍ نحوَها
تسبقُoutstripping منَّاof ours الأرجلَthe feet السائرهwalking
تسبقُ منَّا الأرجلَ السائره
And so, out of longing, they were drawn toward her,
So we raced towards her, driven by passion
outstripping our walking feet.
Though our hasty legs did falter and fail
وعادَand ended up منَّاamong us كلُّevery ذيpossessor of صبوةٍamorous longing
وعادَ منَّا كلُّ ذي صبوةٍ
وفيand in حشاهُhis entrails رجلهhis foot عاثرهstumbling
وفي حشاهُ رجله عاثره
And every lovestruck one among us ended up
And each ardent youth returned from her
with his foot stumbling amid his entrails.
