O you whom God fashioned as the spirit of perfection,

and so you took human form without equal.

Your fingertips were fashioned as a milk-giving she-camel of gifts,

which never suckled hope's camel-calf only to wean it.

Mother of rain, offspring of the ocean, foster-child of

benevolence, sister of the pouring raincloud.

I hoped she would bear abundant bounty for me,

yet from my hope I obtained only scant provision.

I never thought to find you, in my time of heavy burdens,

casting my loads off the back of your concern.

How strange that your generosity has forgotten me!

And so I fell from it into the realm of neglect.

Why must I rouse in you the gaze of bounty,

which never slept when it came to generosity and favors?

You avert your eyes while my scope has narrowed—how often

you broadened my scope in the enemy's eyes!

And my hopes circle while your sea is brimming,

yet you turn their thirsty wanderers toward mere trickles.

O shepherd of my hope, why have you branded it,

    after that kindness, with neglect?

I have known your affection never to change, while others'

    shifts with shifting circumstances.

    فأفض عليه مُنعماً بسجالِ

    And I see my hope is still a planting of your generosity;

so graciously pour bucketfuls upon it.
