O namesake of him who was ransomed from slaughter

By the God of heaven with a mighty sacrifice,

And watchful, learned one, who in his guidance

Stood in for his watchful, learned grandfather:

I came, O scion of Hashim, to gather from you

Virtues sweet as the sweetness of the roots.

Then misfortunes kept me from my aim,

Brought by the hand of ignoble Time.

    Your illness set a veil between us, O full moon;

How often, then, have I gazed at the stars!

You are not the ailing one; rather, my heart

—oh, may God heal you!—is the truly ailing one.
