على خدّه خالٌ إلى الزنج ينسب
And a graceful youth of Arab descent appeared to me;
I saw an Arab boy with a beauty spot,
On his cheek is a mole of Zanj descent.
Like a black mole, the mark of a Negro slave.
وماand not نظرتsaw عينايmy eyes كالخالlike the mole مبتلًىone afflicted
وما نظرت عيناي كالخال مبتلًى
مقيماًdwelling علىon نارٍa fire منfrom الخدّthe cheek تلهبblazes
مقيماً على نارٍ من الخدّ تلهب
And my eyes have never seen anyone as afflicted as the mole,
Never before have my eyes seen
Dwelling on a fire that blazes from the cheek:
A mole abiding on a flaming cheek.

فتلدغه أفعى من الجعد تارةً

وتلسبه طوراً من الصدغ عقرب
Then, at times, a viper from the curls bites it,
Now stung by a serpent of curling hair,
And at others, a scorpion from the temple stings it.
Now again by a scorpion of the temple nipped.
