    فما لكِ في العلياء فوزةُ مَشهدِ

    Umayya, descend into obscurity and climb the heights;

for no victory in glory's arena is yours.

Down to your ancestral worth and its low estate!

There is neither pure lineage nor purity of birth.

You overreached, not through nobility; so retreat

to where you belong, and sit in the vilest seat.

Your past is what you know, and like it

is your present, in its ever-renewed disgrace.

What, then, ennobled your ancestral honors

and raised you to the noblest height of sovereignty?

Was it the hardness of your upper part, where the rain's moisture

dried up, or the softness of your damp lower part?

Sons of Abd Shams, may God never water the pit

that encloses you and obscenity in the vilest grave.

Have you not always, through your debauchery,

been too preoccupied to despoil the sons of Ahmad?

Back away from it—may you have no father! You only

advanced beyond it, not through superior nobility.

I marvel at one whose head is lowly as a sandal,

yet shows it off with a lord's crown bound upon it.

Leave Hashim alone; glory binds its crown

upon the brows that shine in the assembly.

And take disgrace for yourselves; draw its veil

to yourselves, over a face blackened by shame.

He is groomed—but for nothing except lewdness—

your child, as he goes out at evening and at dawn.

And your women are pampered, but for prostitution,

so every bed is defiled by them in the dark.

    فكيف لكم تُرجى طهارةُ مولد

    And more than one man waters your tilth with water;

so how can purity of birth be hoped for among you?

You committed an outrage whose stains endure,

a disgrace to your ancestral honors in every gathering.

Ask Abd Shams: does he see any offense by Hashim

against him, apart from the favor he once bestowed?

And tell Abu Sufyan: what do you resent?

Was giving you safety on the day of conquest Muhammad's sin?

How, then, did you repay Ahmad for his kindness?

By spilling the blood of the pure ones of Ahmad's house.

On the morning when, through treachery's passes, toward them

you emerged from a lofty peak pouring forth ill fortune.

You sent against them every black banner, beneath which

you drove upon them every monstrous, mighty calamity.

No day matches al-Taff for a mourner's anguish,

    a burning soul's torment, or a grief-stricken one's sorrow.

Torments gave the hearts their pounding,

and told them, 'Rise in grief, and sit!'

On the morning when the son of Revelation's daughter fell upon his face,

slain upon the heat of the blazing earth.

The house of Harb knew that, on the day of his killing,

it shed the blood of Islam with a godless man's sword.

By my life, though he did not die upon his pillow,

a brother of battle dies without a pillow.

And though the Indian-made bright blades devoured his remains,

a noble clansman's flesh is food for Indian steel.

And though none but his sword witnessed his killing,

it was his true brother in every encounter.

He died indeed—but a Hashimite death,

known as theirs beneath the splintered spears.

A noble man whose nose refused to smell abasement,

so he made it smell the thorns of well-aimed spears.

And he said, 'Stand, O soul, as one approaching

the pools of death, not as one who hesitates.

I see humiliation's back as a harsher mount

than death, for death lies in wait there.'

So he chose to tread on the ember of battle

on foot, rather than yield the reins with his hand.

    فلست ترى ما عشتَ نهضةَ سيّد

    The son of Ali and the defense of honor died together;

so never, as long as you live, will you see a lord rise,

    nor a Hashimite crushing a blood-enemy's nose

on a day of terror with an Indian-steel sword.

Hashim's war has indeed laid down its burdens,

and said, 'My appointed time is the rising of the pure Qa'im.'

Imam of guidance, listen—you are within hearing—

    to a rouser's reproach, not a detractor's.

May my soul be your ransom; there is no room for patience,

that you should avert your eyes, nor any reserve for endurance.

Do you forget—and can Umayya's deeds be forgotten

by one whose eye her deeds have grievously inflamed?

Do you hold back from war? What heart among you

has not blazed against them with the fire of rage?

Rise, then; draw the sword against them and exact redress

for yourself with the sharp, cleaving blade unsheathed.

Rise, and show them the meteors of spearheads rising

under the pall of battle's dusky night.

How often they entered a speckled serpent's cave among you,

and how often they trampled your thick-maned lion's lair!

How often they tore open a freeborn woman's tent among you,

in defiance, and broke a proud man's neck among you!

There is no redress until you spatter from your swords

their blood upon every pasture and watering place.

Nor is there redress until you make horses trample their skulls,

as they made them trample the noblest lord among you.

Nor is there redress unless you make their women stand

as your captives, in gathering after gathering.

And another thing: unless you do it, there will remain

the bitter grievances of an anguished, grieving heart:

annihilate them thirsty, as they killed you,

with thirst-parched hearts whose heat was never cooled.
