Does my lament delight you, O Time?

Or is it that you have found my weeping sweet?

Each day I encounter hardship from you,

Yet surely you are two days—hardship and ease.

You never cease stirring up the onslaught of calamities,

Or mustering an army of ill fortune,

Until you suddenly struck the very core of my heart

And visited me with an inexorable bereavement.

You left me no endurance, though I had thought myself

    Steadfast in every dreadful calamity.

And many a reprover, merry of ear—never have

Time's vicissitudes cast grit into his eyes—

Has blamed me, his vitals still between his ribs,

While the earth lies sealed over my vitals.

O censurer of my grief, had I command of my composure,

I would not spend the night mingling my tears with my weeping.

O my dear son, if life could be draped upon a man,

Out of ardent love, I would drape my own life upon you.

O sleeper, death instead of slumber has filled

Your eyes, O you bereft of the delight of sleep.

A sickness passed from me into you, leaving behind

In my heart the deadliest sickness of grief.

My anguish for you! At every moment I seek

To meet you then, though no time for meeting remains.

And though you are veiled, where you lie in the earth,

From my eyes, you are still within my vitals.

    نفسي فداؤك من قريبٍ ناءِ

    Remembrance has brought you near, while death has borne you far;

My soul be your ransom, so near and yet so far.

Had I died of my sorrow for you, it would not have been

A wonder; the wonder is that I live on.

May the grave whose soil enfolds your body never cease

To breathe in dew's fragrant caravans.

And even if they refuse, where death bore you away—

    The rain-laden clouds—to pour forth,

Then my tears are driven toward you, despite the distance,

As rain by the south wind of deep-drawn sighs.
