Whenever the one who loves you draws closer,

You draw farther away from him and shun him more.

A trait that nobility does not approve

In one who is a Hashimite to the core.

O valiant one, in the clay of loftiness took hold

Your ancestral roots; noble they grew, and noble you.

Do not subject these bonds to severance.

Today is not a day without ties of kinship.

How can you avert your eyes, having heard a reproach

In which I did not think I had strayed from what was right?

Was it unclear through some shortcoming,

Or do you think I spoke improperly in it?

Or did you delay out of weariness—far be it

From you!—so that silence became your answer?

I had thought that, as soon as I

Called, I would receive the response I hoped for.

Yet here I am, sending messengers one after another,

With one letter of reproach following another.

I cannot bring myself to let my tongue say

That some change has touched that honored presence.

Ah, you are above any suspicion creeping in

That your virtues might turn into their opposites.

    Those traits have refused, even

Toward foes, to be anything but sweet.

You have sorely hurt me, O uniquely woven one,

So I have woven verse about you in reproach.

If you find I have long kept returning to you

    With reproaches, coming and going,

It was out of love, then, that he complained; and the most hopeless complainer

Is one who treats afflictions with his reproach.
