You stirred in us the longing of old,
You have awakened in me longing of old
And the memory of that gentle life,
And memories of that easy life

And days we clothed in beauty,
And days we adorned with beauty
And made the sphere of bliss dance for them.
And danced for it the dance of bliss

We filled them with beauty by our presence, so they became
We filled them with us, beautifully, so they were
Like a well-strung necklace on Time's neck.
Like a well-strung necklace, in the prime of time

And generous young men, upon whom
And gallant youths in fine raiment
Were robes of sound taste.
Wearing garments of tasteful elegance

Their traits were sweeter than wishes,
They have manners sweeter than wishes
And more enchanting than exchanging cups with a boon companion.
And more delightful than intimacies with boon companions

Like your own zeal for revelry and youthful frolic,
Like your anxiety about manners and propriety
Though they were of noble character.
Though you are of most noble character

I invited them to convivial company, and they came,
I invited them to intimacy, and they came
As one generous man comes to another.
With the response of the generous to the generous

And they came like sandgrouse reaching fresh water
And they came like rain-clouds that poured down abundantly
In thirst, and swept in like the breeze.
On a thirst and rushed like the breeze

وَيَلهوand playing بِالمَجَرَّةِwith the Milky Way وَالنُجومِand the stars
And the night frolicked in its youth,
And the night would frolic in its youth
And played with the Milky Way and the stars.
Playing with the stars and planets
فَواصَلناso we continued كُئوسَcups of الراحِwine حَتّىuntil

So we drank cup after cup of wine until
So we continued passing the cup of comfort until
The lights of dawn appeared to the eye.
The eyes could see the lights of dawn

And with it we put Ibn Hani's counsel into practice,
And we followed the opinion of Ibn Hani
And so were numbered among the companions of al-Raqim.
And joined the ranks of the doomed

And a guileless gazelle among Egypt's sons,
And a gazelle from the elegant Misrs
Sweet of speech, with a mole-marked cheek,
Eloquent, with a wine-colored cheek

And a Babylonian gaze, tenderly downcast,
And a Babylonian glance, with languor
As though his eyes bore an orphan's look.
As if its lashes held the mark of the orphan

He gave us conversation to drink in convivial company;
They entertained us in conversation with tales
In his presence we forgot the daughter of the vines.
That made us forget the daughter of the vineyards
سَلامُthe peace of اللَهِGod ياO عَهدَtime of التَصابيyouthful frolic

God's peace, O time of youthful frolic,
Greetings of God, O age of refinement
Be upon you and the youths of those bygone days.
Upon you and the youths of the ancient covenant
أَحِنُّI yearn لَهُمfor them وَدونَهُمُand between me and them فَلاةٌa wilderness

I yearn for them, but between us lies a wilderness,
I yearn for them, and beyond them lies only wilderness
As though its vast expanse were a forbearing man's breast.
As if its expanse were the heart of the forbearing

As though its surface were a lovesick lover's entrails,
As if its barrenness were the vitals
Which had flared up with anguished longing.
Of one in passionate love, inflamed with anguish

As though its mirage, when it gleamed there,
As if its mirage, when it appeared in it
Were deceit gleaming on a scoundrel's face.
Were a deception that appeared in the face of the wretched

Lihb lose their way in its night, becoming like
Its night leads astray with flames that tell
The people of Moses in the Valley of Wandering.
Of the people of the valley of the lost

And the dust-scattering winds walk bewildered through it,
And the one gone astray wanders in it confused
When the noonday heat is carried over from Hell.
When the emigration from hell is related

So who can help me see those haunts,
So who will grant me to see those pleasures
And the beauty of old within them?
And the ancient beauty that is in them?
فَماfor ... is not حَظُّthe fortune of اِبنِthe son of داوودٍDavid كَحَظّيlike my fortune

For the son of David's fortune is not like mine,
For the lot of the son of David is not like my lot
Nor was I given a share of the All-Knowing's knowledge.
Nor have I been given any knowledge of the All-Knowing
وَلاnor أَناI مُطلَقٌunfettered كَالفِكرِlike thought أَسريtravel by night

Nor am I free as thought, to travel by night
Nor am I free like thought taken captive
And outstrip the smiling flashes in the clouds.
So I can outstrip the clouds in speed
وَلَكِنّيbut I مُقَيَّدَةٌfettered رِحاليmy traveling gear

But my traveling gear lies shackled
Rather, my journey is fettered
By poverty's chain in the valley of cares.
By the fetter of nothingness in the valley of sorrows

I went far from home, seeking my livelihood,
I traveled from the dwellings, seeking my fortune
And journey through wildernesses and borderlands.
Wandering in the desolate valleys and hills

And no wilderness in Sudan have I left
And I left no desert in the Sudan
Without staining my skin with its soil.
Without soaking my garment in its dust

And here I am between the fangs of death,
And here I am between the jaws of death
And beneath the claws of grave calamity.
And beneath the fearful calamities

And were it not for a fervor for glory within me,
And were it not for a chapter on glory I have
I would have been content with my life as an ostrich is.
I would be content with my life like the ignorant

And son of the pillar of upright religion

Your family raised a pillar for our faith,
Your people established you as a pillar for our faith
That is kin to the corner of al-Hatim.
With lineage reaching the Pillar of the Sacred House

For no seekers of bounty circled it and returned
The dissolute have not circumambulated it and returned
Without gold-laden camels and caravans of musk.
With anything but unseemliness and vileness

I came to you, though hardships urge on my departure
And my condition is more tenuous than mist.
And I am in a state more wretched than fenugreek

And I have become, through my striving and my toil
And I have become from my toil and labors
For sustenance, like a threadbare garment.
For livelihoods like a worn-out garment

So do not wear out my face's skin—may I be your ransom—
So do not, may I be ransomed for you, make my face forbidden
Nor sever the bond with a close friend.
Or cut off the intimacy of affection
