بَنَيتُمyou built عَلىupon الأَخلاقِmoral virtues آساسَfoundations مُلكِكُمyour rule
فَكانَand so there was لَكُمfor you بَينَamong الشُعوبِthe peoples ذِمامُa bond of trust
You built the foundations of your rule upon virtue,
You built your kingdom on a moral foundation
and so you had a bond of trust among the peoples.
Thus you held the reins over the nations
فَماso why ليfor me أَرىI see الأَخلاقَmoral virtues قَدalready شابَturned gray قَرنُهاits forelock
وَحَلَّand settled بِهاupon it ضَعفٌweakness وَدَبَّand crept in سَقامُsickness
Why, then, do I see virtue's forelock turned gray,
Yet I see morals now tainted and frail
with weakness besetting it and sickness creeping in?
Weakened and plagued by disease
أَخافُI fear عَلَيكُمfor you عَثرَةًa stumble بَعدَafter نَهضَةٍa rise
فَلَيسَfor there is no لِمُلكِfor the rule of الظالِمينَthe oppressors دَوامُcontinuance
I fear for you a stumble after a rise,
I fear for you a stumble after this rise
for the rule of oppressors does not endure.
For unjust rulers, no kingdom lasts
أَضَعتُمyou squandered وِداداًfriendship لَوif رَعَيتُمyou had honored عُهودَهُits pledges
لَماwould not قامَhave arisen بَينَbetween الأُمَّتَينِthe two nations خِصامُstrife
You squandered a friendship; had you honored its pledges,
You lost affection you should have kept
no strife would have arisen between the two nations.
And so strife grew between our peoples
أَبَعدَis it after حِيادٍneutrality لاmay not رَعىuphold اللَهُGod عَهدَهُits pledge
وَبَعدَand after الجُروحِthe wounds الناغِراتِfestering وِئامُconcord
After neutrality—may God not uphold its pledge—
Without neutrality, no oath kept by God
and after festering wounds, can there be concord?
After deep wounds, how can there be peace?
إِذاif كانَis فيin حُسنِthe goodness of التَفاهُمِmutual understanding مَوتُناour death
فَلَيسَthen there is no عَلىupon باغيthe seeker of الحَياةِlife مَلامُblame
If amicable understanding means our death,
If in good accord lies our death
then no blame falls on one who seeks life.
Then no blame rests on one who wrongs life
