ماwhat بالُthe matter with دَندَرَةٍDendera تَميسُsways تَهادِياًgracefully
ما بالُ دَندَرَةٍ تَميسُ تَهادِياً
مَيسَthe swaying of العَروسِthe bride مَشَتshe walked عَلىupon إِستَبرَقِsilken brocade
مَيسَ العَروسِ مَشَت عَلى إِستَبرَقِ
Why does Dendera sway so gracefully,
With the sway of a bride walking upon silken brocade,
وَالنيلُand the Nile يَجريflows تَحتَهاbeneath her مُتَهَلِّلاًbeaming with joy
وَالنيلُ يَجري تَحتَها مُتَهَلِّلاً
وَالمَوجُand the waves بَينَbetween مُهَلِّلٍone cheering وَمُصَفِّقِand one clapping
وَالمَوجُ بَينَ مُهَلِّلٍ وَمُصَفِّقِ
While the Nile flows beneath her, beaming with joy,
And the waves—some cheering, others clapping?
أَلَعَلَّهاcould it be that she وَالتيهُwhile pride يَثنيbends عِطفَهاher flank
أَلَعَلَّها وَالتيهُ يَثني عِطفَها
حَمَلَتshe has borne رِكابَthe mounts of زَعيمِthe leader of قَلبِthe heart of المَشرِقِthe East
حَمَلَت رِكابَ زَعيمِ قَلبِ المَشرِقِ
Could it be that she, with pride bending her flank,
Has borne the mounts of the leader of the heart of the East?
إِنّيindeed I أَرىsee نوراًa light يَفيضُpours forth وَطَلعَةًand a countenance
إِنّي أَرى نوراً يَفيضُ وَطَلعَةً
قَدindeed زانَهاhas adorned it وَضَحُthe brightness of الجَبينِthe brow المُشرِقِradiant
قَد زانَها وَضَحُ الجَبينِ المُشرِقِ
Indeed, I see a light pouring forth, and a countenance
Adorned by the brightness of a radiant brow.
هَذاthis زَعيمُthe leader of النيلِthe Nile حَلَّhas settled in عَرينَهُhis lair
هَذا زَعيمُ النيلِ حَلَّ عَرينَهُ
بَعدَafter الغِيابِthe absence فَياso O وُفودُdelegations تَدَفَّقيstream in
بَعدَ الغِيابِ فَيا وُفودُ تَدَفَّقي
Here is the leader of the Nile, settled in his lair
After his absence; so, O delegations, stream in!
وَتَيَمَّنيand seek blessing بِقُدومِهِin his arrival وَتَرَفَّقيand be gentle
وَتَيَمَّني بِقُدومِهِ وَتَرَفَّقي
عِندَamid الزِحامِthe throng فَسَلِّميthen offer greetings وَتَفَرَّقيand disperse
عِندَ الزِحامِ فَسَلِّمي وَتَفَرَّقي
And find blessing in his arrival, and be gentle
In the throng; then offer greetings and disperse.
وَتَنَظَّريand wait إِنَّindeed الخَلاصَdeliverance مُحَتَّمٌassured
وَتَنَظَّري إِنَّ الخَلاصَ مُحَتَّمٌ
فَاللَهُfor God أَسلَمَhas entrusted أَمرَناour cause لِمُوَفَّقِto one blessed with success
فَاللَهُ أَسلَمَ أَمرَنا لِمُوَفَّقِ
And wait: deliverance is assured,
For God has entrusted our cause to one blessed with success.
كَمhow many أَزمَةٍa crisis مَرَّتpassed بِناover us فَاِجتاحَهاthen he swept it away
كَم أَزمَةٍ مَرَّت بِنا فَاِجتاحَها
سَعدٌSaad بِسَيلِwith the torrent of بَيانِهِhis eloquence المُتَدَفِّقِsurging
سَعدٌ بِسَيلِ بَيانِهِ المُتَدَفِّقِ
How many a crisis befell us, then was swept away
By Saad with the surging torrent of his eloquence!
ياO أَيُّهاyou السَبّاقُthe frontrunner فيin طَلَبِpursuit of العُلاthe heights
يا أَيُّها السَبّاقُ في طَلَبِ العُلا
هاbehold قَدindeed أَتَيتَyou have come مُجَلِّياًin first place لَمnot تُسبَقِbeen outstripped
ها قَد أَتَيتَ مُجَلِّياً لَم تُسبَقِ
O you who race ahead in pursuit of the heights,
Behold, you have come in first, never outstripped!
سَبَقَoutran البَشيرَthe bearer of good news رِكابُthe mounts of سَعدٍSaad جارِياًrunning
سَبَقَ البَشيرَ رِكابُ سَعدٍ جارِياً
وَرِكابُand the mounts of سَعدٍSaad وانِياًflagging لَمnot يُلحَقِbe overtaken
وَرِكابُ سَعدٍ وانِياً لَم يُلحَقِ
Saad's mounts, racing, outran the bearer of good news,
And Saad's mounts, even flagging, were not overtaken.
